Broke one of the T40 screws

  • I can find stainless metric allen bolts at True Value in the expensive bolt bins. However they only have them with the mushroom pan top. I hate those. They strip easy.

Yes they do strip easily so I would not advise anyone to use them where they have to be torqued down. I would say that for any brand the hole is not deep enough to give it any strength which makes it to me only to use as a dress up bolt. So you have to use the regular allen head bolt or hex head for anything that needs to be torqued down. Also you can find the smaller hex head with the washer type shoulder at least in metric, because I just bought some to use from Ace. Also remember to use never seize on any stainless bolt.

  • @rabtech. I have some extras laying around. If you need a few let me know. I have the M6 helicoil kits also. Center punch the broken bolt and use left hand drill bit. You can then remove with an EZ out. If not helicoil. I have done the same thing. Let me know if you need anything and I can send it your way.

And it was me that @V-SHOT saw break one off. Had to drill it out and insert helicoil. All good now. Used factory replacement bolts but would consider an upgrade kit if someone came out with one. The factory fasteners are junk.

  • Every bolt I remove has no thread left on it. And I don't strip them when they go in. They just are terrible..

This, i keep finding more and more bolts that looks like they are stripped as i keep disassembling the Sling for mods, The ones who hold my roll Hoops and the speaker pods being the worse so far.

I did take a trip to my local Ace Hardware but they didn't have anything close to them in stainless , figured nothing else would be good due to the exposed to the elements factor.

So if someone does come up with something sign me up for as bucket full of them.

Is not that I am mean, I just don't sugarcoat what I say.

  • I am going to run by the Whitesel Fasteners next week and see if they will come up with something. They are another huge bolt company that sells to furniture and auto mfg plants. I have an account with them. So let's see how that works.

If you could find ones that work I would be willing to purchase them from the forum store.

If you cannot find the right length just buy the longer one and cut it off to fit.

  • I have used "Pro Bolts" in the UK on my Polaris Victory.
In fact, I've ordered a bunch of Red Aluminium, Domed bolts and nuts, to go on something that I'm working on for the SlingShot, right now.
They supply: Aluminium - Stainless Steel - Titanium
    - Titanium, Stainless Steel, Aluminium Fasteners & Motorcycle Bolts | ProBolt -

I belive that they have US distributors, but you will need to check that.

  • I think we can place the blame for all of the stripped fasteners we find on our Slingshots to the assemblers who have probably been forced by the Polaris bean counters to use power-tools to speed up the assembly process and they can't take the time to make sure the darned fastener is properly started before tightening it down.

  • @slingmods , @Tripod has a great point. If you build it we will come. X/

We've actually looked into this. We found a company that powder coats the heads of stainless bolts any color we want to offer a stainless bolt in black. This would allow us to have the sheer strength without rusting. Problem we've had is finding a bolt head that people will like. We'd be happy to buy in bulk of 1000 bolts and pass that savings on to you if you guys point us in the right direction stylistically.

    Exhaust Manafold Heat Shield

@roadog1aj, you said you used stainless hex head bolts, but only on your header to replace the soft metal Allen screws. What did you use, and do you think they would work on the rest of the Sling?

Sorry...late to this game!!! @KayTwo....I did the same thing as @FunCycle did...I went to Ace Hardware and dug around till I found stainless bolts & washers that would work. I liked the hex head bolts for the exhaust manifold cover mostly for the fact that I could easily remove and install them without worrying about rounding out the internal hex of a button head bolt. I would do just like others have mentioned for the rest of the Sling.....go with stainless button head bolts if you can. It would be a pretty sure bet I'd buy a stainless button head bolt kit from one of the big vendors if they were to provide them!!! I'd love to switch out all the torx body bolts to stainless!!!! This may be my spring project anyways....I'm going to take a look in my McMaster-Carr catalogue to see what they have as well. They are my hardware porn site!! :00000019::00000019:

  • always remember to chase the threads if your going to the trouble of replacing all of them.
As @BKL noted I have found many pre-stripped when removed.
