Wanting advice on Security Camera(s) for my house. Ideally they would be wireless and connect to my wifi network and use the laptop to record.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
JT

I have had really good luck using Foscam products. Great bang for the buck and they have a pretty large selection depending on what you are looking for feature wise.

I'll be watching this as I am in market. Talking to a few who have say outdoor WiFi stinks??
If they get inside, you might want to consider a "security blanket"
We use a Foscam product for our big chicken coop, but not sure it is wireless. They have some great products though.
Outdoor or Indoor?
We have a 16 camera setup here at the shop and it works good and can be viewed on my phone from anywhere, alarms can be setup, etc. It is a wired solution though and not wireless, I know someone who had a wireless setup and they had to shut off their cameras anytime they wanted to use the internet since the traffic on the network of 8 cameras slowed everything down, most likely they didn't have something setup correctly, but something to consider when choosing as I am not sure if that is common with wireless systems.
I researched the wireless solution and could not find a good set up (at least for me). Like @Dave@DDMWorks said....the wireless wifi based cameras use far too much bandwidth to be viable for me. I went with a 4 camera wired set up at home (with a few trail cams strategically located in wooded areas), and an 8 camera wired set up at my shop. The 8 camera wired system is SVAT, with a 1Terabyte hard drive DVR. It was the easiest to connect and access over wifi. I can access the system remotely from anywhere using my laptop, Nexus 7 Tablet, or Galaxy cellphone.
Instead of a security camera system, I just hired this guy to hang out in the front yard and watch the property.
I have 16 camera setup.
Now I have to roll up the water hose...... and carry those ladders to the barn along with that engine stand.
My OCD is kicking in....

Outdoor. Was hoping to find something with 180+ degree field of view to watch the alley behind the garage and another to watch the front porch.
you can slow the framerate down to almost nothing to alleviate the high bandwidth usage. You just need to find a kit that allows that. We've used some that slow down to as much as a frame every couple of seconds. Not really video, but it will suffice for what we're looking for.

You can get cameras (indoor or outdoor) that can be set to automatically pan back and forth in preset degrees (you set how many degrees you want it to pan). Most cameras are cross compatible with the standard systems out there. I bought better cameras to add onto both my systems that could be manually zoomed in or out and also manually focused for better coverage in their particular areas. @Jonathan Thompson I also HIGHLY recommend going with a company that SUPPORTS the systems they sell. This is very important, because they can help you fine tune your system when you are trying to get it working over the internet. They can be a bugger to get working just right so you can remotely access them wherever you are and with whatever you're using to view on.

By the way... That is where the white beast sleeps..... I have to keep an eye on it...

I guess I have to be careful when making "blanket" statements
