Can anyone tell me what the symptoms are for an angle drive going bad?
Angle drive failure symptoms

This is always a good clue...

Any strange noises before fracturing?
-
angle drives are full of noises when they are working correctly
I think when the noises stop you should be nervous

This is always a good clue...
that looks catastrophic
-
lots of people hear whining and grinding noises.
-
^^^^^
That’s usually from the passenger seat...

Do you think the angle drive brace everyone's talking about would have held that together?

Swing-arm bearing noise will usually have like a rhythmic clicking. Belt noise often is a high-pitched whine. A failing Angle Drive will typically have some slop in the gears inter-meshing and will have a grinding or whining sound.
I made a video using my cell phone sitting in one of the cupholders and recorded the noise from my Angle Drive. See Post # 9 here - Anybody have any idea if the 2020 Angle Drive will fit older models.

Of the angle drive failures I have seen pictures of, it appears that the bearing/gear had been subjected to high heat, like the bearing failed first then cracking the housing? Or, has a crack allowed the lubricant to leak unknowingly causing the drive to go dry and then followed by catastrophic failure?

That's a possibility. If you look at the 2020+ Angle Drive casing, it has very visible reinforcement in the throat of the casing where the Angle Drive is connected to the driveshaft. The 2020+ Angle Drive has significantly more reinforcement in the casing along with a change in the parts count and how they fit inside.

You usually hear the words: WTF? BANG

You usually hear the words: WTF? BANG
Just don't push the RED button and all will be good

Was that in rewind?
I would think, snap, wobble wobble, flop, WTF?
You mileage may vary.
Angle drive is a splash lubricated system, insufficient lubrication (fluid level) and fluid leakage will lead to failure. Don't ignore abnormal noise. Isolate the noise and address it.

Thanks for all the input. I think I have a different noise as the drive train feels solid. I only get a meralic crunching noise when I first take of in first gear from a full start, and only after I've been driving for 10 minutes or so. Will check to see if may be my exhaust system has shifted a little.
Thanks again

What you're describing sounds like it could be the rear wheel bearing.

Still have this paper weight

[/quote]A lot of times when we see a failure like that the owner was generally low on fluid in the angle drive based on the lack of fluid that came out during the failure. That being said, no brace on the market is going to keep it from failing in that scenario. The braces are not an end all solution to the angle drives holding together. They offer extra support in the area that tends to fail on a healthy drive. The angle drive is a part that many people pay no attention to. These drives are known to seep whether it’s from the side cover which is generally easy to see or at the seal where the drive shaft goes in. Mine seal has gone bad twice. Checking the level a couple times a year isn’t a bad idea. Just my two cents.

how often should you check the fluid?
I have a 2018 and never have
I had it serviced at the dealer a few times but am I supposed to ask them to check it or is it normal for them too when they do an oil change

Depends of how good your dealer tech is. I've got a SUPER dealership Nielsen's Ent, in Villa Park, IL. They know I'm not good with anything but putting gas in and driving lots of miles, so they watch everything else. Ask?
