Corona Virus

  • Bikerndiver true true. Sad but true.

So far the only one that does not take a salary in solidarity with the American people is our president. I have not heard of one single congressman, senator, or any government entity going without while we are told to.

    Infuriating yet not surprised.

We’ll get there when we get there and not a minute before. 😎

  • Whats also interesting is that with the $600 per week the stimulus added to state unemployment many people will get more not working than they did before - - in California the max weekly unemployment is $450 add to that the $600 per week from the fed and you are getting $1050 per week - which equals $54,600 per year - and when you figure there is no tax taken out upfront you would have to make even more at your regular job to have the same amount available to spend

and in some States the max weekly minimum wage is even higher than California's $450 =O

It's actually better than that, no expenses for gas to get to work or child care.

California just announced its giving illegal aliens $500 each. Totaling millions.

they way I heard them explain the $600.....first it’s coming from the feds not the states...So it’s separate from the states guidelines.... they couldn’t let the states do it because it would have involved all the states redesigning their entire Payout system and it would have slowed everything down....and now they are so overwhelmed it’s slowed down anyway.... So in order to get the money out to everyone quickly they decided to it they way they did. For speed and simplicity... they knew it was going to turn out lopsided for some .....their heart was in the right place the logistics dictated the result..

  • I've never understood our unemployment system. They give you just below subsistence level income, withhold nothing, then tax you on it at the federal level. How are you supposed to pay those taxes when you're unemployed? All employers are required to withhold earnings for state and federal taxes. This should be the model for all government payments as well. If it is taxable income, taxes should be withheld upfront.

Remember folks - this isn't a rehearsal, this is The Show!8)

I dont know how other states do it, but here in California they give you the option of having federal tax taken out.

Honestly I haven't been in that system since probably the 1980s. I guess it might have changed in 30 or 40 years. I just know that I still hear my brother the tax man refer to what he calls 'The Unemployment Ass-Stomp', meaning the tax bill at the end of the year.

I have been fortunate enough to have not needed unemployment, but my wife works in a Casino as a dealer and they have completely closed until at least May 31 - as such we did need to sign her up - this is why I am familiar with the option to have tax withheld

It's a tough choice to make, especially in a single-earner household. You know you should withhold but if you do, either you can't eat or you can't keep the lights on. Most people receiving unemployment need the whole check just to survive.

  • the entire taxation system isn’t fair....flat tax everyone. No loop holes.

the federal stimulus money Is supposed to be tax free..$1200 not sure about the $600..

it does pose interesting questions - normally unemployment is given by the state and is only subject to federal income tax, but in this case the $600 part is coming from the fed - so will it be taxable? or will it only be taxed by the State? or will they treat is just as if it came from the state and only have the fed tax apply? or could they just say that all taxes are going to be waived due to the virus?

it is because of these unknowns that for my wife we just chose not to have taxes withheld - we will deal with that when the time comes

  • Again, perspective is key. The 2018 influenza season dwarfs what’s going on right now. Nobody seemed to be wanting to lock us down then. And with almost 1,000,000 people admitted to the hospital I don’t remember any stories about not having capacity🤔

    OPEN UP NOW!

CDC estimates that the burden of illness during the 2017–2018 season was high with an estimated
45 million people getting sick with influenza, 21 million people going to a health care provider, 810,000 hospitalizations, and 61,000 deaths from influenza (Table 1). The number of cases of influenza-associated illness that occurred during 2017-2018 was the highest since the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, when an estimated 60 million people were sick with influenza (7).

    Thanks for the info SoCal

  • Here is what is different, from what I understand, the FLU is not nearly as contagious as this little bug, and it's new, so less is known about it, less treatment, etc.

Here is info about spreading the flu : https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/spread.htm

Now read about Covid-19 and how it spreads : https://www.cdc.gov/coronaviru…epare%2Ftransmission.html

Very similar, but there are some very important differences.

When you get the flu, you are told to rest, isolate and drink lots of fluids, basically isolate, but you are only contagious for the first couple of days. Not so with Covid-19, you don't even have to be showing symptoms to spread this. We'll know a lot more about this virus in the coming years, and it's prudent to take precautions to prevent the spread.

I've seen people saying that it's not as bad as the media is letting on, and that's probably true. However, all of the areas that did a stay at home order, has prevented this from spreading as bad as it could have. Over 650k cases in the US so far, and we are up to almost 35k deaths. Before this year is out, we'll have more deaths from this vs the flu.

Everyone can choose their own course, I'm staying away from people, happy at home. Why? Because once this blows over, I don't want to have to worry about being around my grand kids or my elderly mother and other family. That's what is important for me, I don't want to risk them in the future.

Adding a bit extra - you talk about hospital cases. The CDC / JH pages talk about our cases, and as I stated above, over 650k, and from what I understand, that is tested positive cases.

My county has 5 known cases, and last week, we were told that there are 130 people in quarantine for suspected, no tests available to confirm.

How many cases are in the US that are suspect, and no tests available to confirm. Our local hospitals, and the big ones in Dallas, are all full, and they have removed all elective and non critical surgeries, so people are in for that...

    Just more food for thought

Perhaps I am the exception, but at this point I don't want my wife going back to work in the casino - - - still too many unknowns. And unlike the flu there is no vaccination. and then there are the numbers from John hopkins

COVID-19: Approximately 138,008 deaths reported worldwide; 30,985 deaths in the U.S., as of Apr. 16, 2020.

    *

Flu: 291,000 to 646,000 deaths worldwide; 12,000 to 61,000 deaths in the U.S. per year.

So Covid is up to 30,985 deaths in the U.S. in a bit more than 3 months - - flu on the other hand kills 12,000 to 60,000 Per Year - - so how many will Covid-19 have killed after its been in the U.S. a full year and not just 3 months?

For me there are just too many unknowns and I am not comfortable comparing the flu and what history shows it does in a year with a new virus that is totally unrelated to the flu when we only have a few months of data on it. - - remember flu season starts in fall and runs almost 6 months some years - - we have had 1/2 that amount of time with Covid and we dont even know if it will be seasonal or not

Not worth gambling with my wife's life - - not for me

  • I admit that normally I only read the business section but I can't remember the last time where hospitals couldn't keep up, morgues can't keep up, heck in NY/NJ they are using refrigerated trucks to just throw bodies in(all in the spam on 2 months).

Currently in my family I have 11 immediate and over 30 friends/extended family that have died from this and the total number really won't be known until we resume business and you start asking new people at meetings who are you and they say XYZ passed away so I am his/her replacement......as much as i hate to agree with the dems this is not a joke.

Is not that I am mean, I just don't sugarcoat what I say.

  • I know I opened up this Pandora’s box and I do understand and empathize with all of that however we don’t even have a vaccine for the common cold.

I truly believe this has been around since at least last October November December 2019 so that horse had left the barn long ago. Different things have different contagion rates but this one is far less lethal so far than the regular flu of the past.

Most of the people that are dying are old farts in their 60s like me 😜 and above so I get it - but if we don’t open up this economy, and soon, we will die from the cure before we die from the disease.

We’ll get there when we get there and not a minute before. 😎
