I'm on the hacked list... *sigh*
But seeing that I no longer have a mortgage and more credit than I know what to do with... I'm "meh" about it. Just keep an eye on the credit report from time-to-time ~> and all will be right in the world!
If I can't afford it - I can't have it.
Don't care what any credit agency says.
I never - ever - want to be buried in debt again!
I used to have a great credit score - when I owed everyone money and existed (slaved) to just pay on time.
Now I have no idea what it is.
I just enrolled in LifeLock. I've been meaning to do it anyway, but this breach made me decide to get on it now.
On the news tonight, since they have info that will never change, such as your name, address, SS number, date of birth....your credit is endangered ....FOREVER....
Their advice...you have you monitor your credit closely....FOREVER....
Thank you EQUIFAX....

Not to put too fine a fuckin' point on it, but as a responsible adult, you oughta be checking your credit on a regular basis forever anyways. Kind of the point of being a grownup, protecting and taking responsibility for yourself and the things that belong to you. So I really don't see the big goddamn deal here, other than it's more annoying than normal.
70 years and I have never checked to see what my credit report says. My X screwed it up, did not find out until after the divorce. But I bought 3 cars and a home with bad credit after that.
The point is now 143 million people can have their identities stolen as easy as buying a pack of gum...which means opening, mortgages, credit cards, draining your accounts and opening any other number of accounts in your name...
There could be sometime in the future, ten thousand Kaytwo impersonators buying SS with your money, in your name and your financial responsibility...and killing your credit....for years to come...
And as mentioned tonight....143 million is just about every adult in the country..this is a big deal..
Every story I've ever heard about people that have had their identy stolen....is a horror story that lasts for years and costs thousands of dollars to fix. You get bombarded with creditors calling day and night, turned down for every type of loan and nobody wants to believe it wasn't you that run up all the debt in your name.
Plus all the financial institutions and retailers and insurance companies are going to lose billions and we will have to pay for it..with higher interest, and fees. WE, The innocent consumers always pay...for their loses..
Put a G D freeze and you will be golden, if you need to open a new account unlock it and relock it afterwards.
All major credit bureaus will put a fraud alert a no cost and a credit lock is 23 buck a year and with that on no one can open a new account.
What happened was bad ...yes but it is not the end of the world as long as you stay in front of it.
When LifeLock first started up, their favorite protective move was to automatically lock customer's credit access with the credit bureaus, but the credit folks quickly shut that down. I guess it wass too good a deal and the credit agencies couldn't keep selling your info!
Just found this site that makes it easy to sue EquiFax in your local small claims court - DoNotPay chatbot automatically sues Equifax for free
How to freeze your credit:
In addition to the 3 main credit bureaus everyone is familiar with (Equifax, Experian & TransUnion), there is a lesser known one called Innovis. Make sure you freeze that one too!

You know, between you, and @TravAZ and @Goats_Hogs and a bunch of other people, I am learning *way* too much new shit in the last few days. Wish you guys would just knock it off. If you keep it up, in worried I'm gonna forget my kids' names or something. There's a finite capacity here!
Another helpful tip: opt out of credit card offers that come in the mail for 5 years at a time (scum can take these out of your mailbox if you don't have a locking mailbox & get themselves a card in your name)
Call 1-888-5-OPTOUT (888-567-8688)
A freeze at all 4 credit bureaus is still your best protection, along with quality credit monitoring such as Life Lock. If you are an NRA member you can get LIFELOCK for $99 per year.

Not to be rude but citing anything from yahoo as helpful is an oxymoron, freezing your credit is a hassle if you are planning to buy a house or car in the near future but it is nothing compared to what you have to do to fix your credit if you get hit by some crooks.
But it's on the internet!

A small victory...the FTC has announced it is investigating Equafax...
