When they first came out you had to wear a helmet just like a bike. AL Autocycle ruling changed that so no helmet required (seatbelts are required to be worn). That being said I've been stopped once by an AL state trooper for not wearing helmet last fall, but I have one with me so he let me go with warning. If you are coming from out of town I recommend just having one with you in case and you shouldn't have a problem. Judges throw the tickets out all the time since the current law doesn't require them (verified by my father in law that is a retired police officer), but not something you want to fool with if you are visiting and don't plan on coming back for your court date. "yes sir/ma'am and I have a helmet right here" will go a long way to avoiding the hassle of a ticket. You can do what I did and stop and take if off as soon as I got around the next bend in the road heading in the opposite direction from him...
