Neo's odyssey to buy a Slingshot for Christmas....

  • Long story short i have been trying for the past ~week? to get a slingshot as a christmas present, however i am on my 3rd dealer that wants me to pay upfront and then leave the bike with them at polaris's mercy as to when it will get the recalls done.

i asked in the other forums back when this started if this was an accepted practice because it just doesn't sit well with me to write someone a check for over 20 grand for a bike just to have it sit on their showfloor until polaris decides to send extra parts for them, i am willing to give a good faith security deposit as long as we have a deadline in writing(so in case it takes more than it should i can get out of it) but not the whole thing.

I am at a lost here, trying to buy this thing has been the most grievous process i have the displeasure of dealing with. :cursing::cursing::cursing::cursing::cursing::cursing::cursing::cursing:

Is not that I am mean, I just don't sugarcoat what I say.

There is a "Stop Sale" order in place with the recalls .... technically...it is illegal for them to sell you a unit that has not already had the work completed .....

Others are already taking delivery of factory units with the new parts installed on the assembly line rather than waiting for showroom floor stock to be corrected .....

  • @Neosolidus, do yourself a huge favor and plan on purchasing you Sling from out of state. That may seem a little scary at first sight, but if the Sling is what you REALLY want, leaving your home state may be your only option. If I may offer one option, try contacting @Noel Hughes and his crew at Cycle Springs in Florida. Yes, there are many dealers between you and him. But you are sure to get straight talk from his people. Just a thought.

  • Sounds like at least you found the right forum to get you some information and some help... :)

Like @Orangeman said, I don't think they can let you out the door with a new Slingshot till it has had all known recalls completed..They call it a "stop sale" but I would think they could "sell" it but you would have to wait on them to perform the recall before they would "allow delivery" of the unit to you.

However there should be a huge amount of new Slingshots in dealer showrooms that don't need the recall done... What are you looking for exactly and I'm sure we can find you one somewhere close by.

  • Thank you for Offer @Mateo , I prefer to buy local because i would like to establish a relationship with the dealer that i will be taking the bike to for warranty work which seems like this will need frequently.

I know this might not be right but the dealers here will just brush you aside when dealing with a bike they didn't sell you, i can't even begin to count the many times that i bumped friends on mine when taking my bikes to the dealer.

We sometimes call one after the other and my buddy would get an appointment in 2 week while i could always get it next day or day after, whether right or wrong that is the truth of the matter.

The other thing is IF i did decide to buy it out of state i would have to wait until summer as i am a delicate little flower(GF says that lol) who only rides when it bright and sunny....... I know some of you ride even during harsh weather conditions and while i respect that, i won't do it myself.

Technically they cannot even process a sales order on a vehicle that has not already had the work done ..

    Safety Recall “Stop Sales” Orders

    1. The federal Motor Vehicle Safety Act (the Act) prohibits the sale and delivery of new
vehicles subject to “stop sales” orders issued by vehicle manufacturers or the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), unless and until the defect is corrected.
49 USC 30120(i)(1). This prohibition does not prohibit dealers from offering such
vehicles for sale, as long as the dealer does not actually sell or lease them. 49 USC
    30120(i)(2); 49 CFR Part 573.11(b).

So taking his money in full and making him wait would be a violation ......... not sure about taking a deposit pending correction ......

  • I see. I cant believe the dealers haven't received the first batch of parts yet to get the showroom units finished.

Now that you mention it.,.. How many of us have had the swingarm replaced yet?

I totally understand that they have to perform the recalls before i take it home, my problem has been with the wanting me to pay in full for the machine to sit at the dealer without an exact "day of delivery" if you will, most dealers say once we get the parts from polaris it should take us no more than a week to get it done......way to vague for my taste.

Here is what i was thinking that they should do:
    Option 1
I pay for it on an agreed day lets say Thursday and they say it will be ready saturday at noon(2day after payment), that is reasonable.
    Option 2
I give them a security deposit(lets say 1k) for them to hold that bike and perform the repairs within XX time frame if by XX day the bike is not ready i get my deposit back no harm no foul other than me being disgruntled for their failure to deliver.

I checked Xd675 inventory, he has a cool bike(28k or so) but to be honest not my cup of tea, i want a stock bike so i can do the upgrades i want, paying a premium for a bike with upgrades sounds like a waste if the upgrades done are not what i would do the bike.

For example the deal i had(can still have if i want) is ~21498 OTD for a 2016.5 SL in Ultra Super Ridiculously Fast RED :)

Is not that I am mean, I just don't sugarcoat what I say.

  • Buying used is your best bet if you want to have it now! The dealers can only sell units shipped to them with the new parts or units on which they have already received and installed the replacement parts.
If you're dead-set on a NEW Slingshot, keep contacting dealers to see if they have any sellable units. Of course, supply drives price, so any dealers having units they can actually sell and deliver now may want a premium price.
IMO, $21498 OTD is worth paying and waiting for an SL. Dealers should definitely/hopefully start getting parts sometime in Jan 2017.

As of last Friday still waiting on my dealer to catch up with his floor inventory. I am supposed to be the first on his list when he starts on the recalls. That is his story.

  • I had my 30K mile service last week and was hoping the swingarm would be ready, but my dealer doesn't expect any replacement parts until January, at the earliest. They have One new Slingshot that came in with the new parts they can sell. At least 4 or 5 for which they are still waiting on parts.

  • Legally they can't write a sales contract on a Slingshot that is not ready to go.
Most of the dealers were set up to do the repairs on 'in stock' Slingshots before
doing the one that have already found a home. I have the 2016 fast red and love the color....2017 red is quite different.

  • Sorry for not seeing this post earlier. Last week was crazy busy with the holiday coming up. We can get you a base model if you want to do the mods yourself or have us help with the mods. Give me a call or stop down and we'd be glad to help. As with the recall we cannot let machine leave without the recalls being done. We currently are waiting for a few more parts to arrive to finish the ones we have in stock. The DAY the recall was announced we jumped and ordered parts for the Sling we had in stock and several we had just sold the day before :cursing: - we are doing the best we can to accomodate everyone. All of our existing customers have put their's away for the winter but we plan on picking them up and completing the recalls for them asap so that when the snow melts... .
