does anyone use an aftermarket back up camera other than the OEM backup camera?
Aftermarket back up camera

Yes sir, I have two, one on front and one on back. Details are at Rear camera and if you have questions, let me know.

Plenty of aftermarket cameras available. I found one this Uxcell one on Amazon that was a direct snap into the factory mount too. Didn't even have to use the drill bit. It is reversed so you are looking at it like a mirror (like it should) and it has parking lines. The only thing I note about it is that it makes things look about 4ft closer than it really is. I use it with the Pioneer stereo.

is there an after market camera that can be used to replace the stock camera - if there is a good cheep option it might be better than dealing with the recall
-
Yep, see my link above to the Uxcell one. It snaps directly into the stock camera mount. However, I choose to run the video wire (about 20ft) up to the front stereo instead of using the stock wiring. I did use the stock wiring to power the camera tho and just used a ground screw near by.

I wish it had the housing... i grabbed a base model to save some $$$ and do the various mods myself.
I guess i should of asked if anyone knew of a back up camera that could pop into the existing spot for the back up camera?

Looks like you can get the mount pretty cheaply : https://www.polarispartsmonste…-t19aapf-aarf-all-options
That doesn't include shipping.

For whatever it is worth, with the back-up camera recall, I am understanding that a different mount is required for the new camera, so there is apparently more than one?

That part listing I linked is from a 2019, so should be the newest.

Nope, same mount. You can get the mount thru ebay for $20 (search 5451511). I had the camera recall and they used the stock mount for it too. Just snaps right in. Same with the Uxcell camera - snapped right in, didn't even use the drill.
However, I'm seeing that mount is listed as 2015/6 so maybe they changed it in 2017?** EDIT **
Yep, looks like part # changed for build dates before/after 2/1/2016. New part # through 2019 is 5452814. I don't know the difference(s) but I know they didn't replace the mount when they did my recall. Both same ~$20 shipped.

The recall replacement camera for my 2015 is a slightly larger diameter so a new mount is provided.

I have a 2016 base and added a $15 camera (Amazon) and viewed it on a single din stereo with a popup screen. I did use a rocker switch to activate it tho rather than use the reverse light circuit as a trigger. It works fine. Adding a front one would be easy. Could activate it using the unused pole on the same rocker (spdt) switch.

I still want to figure out how to keep the backup camera on while driving and use it as a somewhat reverse camera.
I feel like someone accomplished this already...
With the dash rocker controlling the camera, I can activate it anytime. Forward, backward or still.

Do you have a DIY on how to do this?

Sorry - no diy writeup. But it is easy. There will be an RCA connector at the rear for the camera to plug into. At the dash, one of the wires from the camera’s RCA plug (I don’t recall which color and my SS is still stored) goes as a video feed to your stereo/screen. The other wire would go to one of the load poles on the spdt rocker. If you also have a front camera its video feed would also go to the stereo/screen while its power lead would go to the other load pole on the rocker switch. The center (supply) pole on the rocker switch will be connected (ideally) to a switched (when the ignition is on) power supply. The camera and screen amperage requirements are so low I’m sure any available circuit in the dash would work. I used the one that powers the radio. I cannot remember whether or not ground circuits are required so check that detail. I’m in my living room in still cool Nova Scotia writing this. Hopefully I didn’t forget any critical details!!
