Need some opinions on an area that is for members only

  • I was sitting here today and UPS ran... They just brought me two of the neatest toys. I am going to do a detailed step by step install on both products...

This got me thinking....I want to share the installs with you guys and gals. But I want the people that see this information to be members.... I don't think I want to give my info out to people who don't want to be a member....

What I thought about was creating a section that "Members" (people who took the time to signup) could see and people just passing by or trolling could not...

My question to y'all is this... Am I on the wrong path or do y'all think I should just post the info for anyone to see? I just feel like the members deserve to have more than the people that dont want to join the site...

I'm curious also who figures out what I have in the pictures also...

And these are just examples of projects. I doubt there is a handful of people that want or need either of these toys. But it needs to start somewhere..

Here is a picture of one of the goodies.....

Here is a picture of the other goodie...

  • I think you are right Rab - if somebody wants to take advantage of the vast amount of knowledge available here the least they can do is sign up. That being said WTF are your new goodies ?(?(

I might not be right but I can sure sound like it

  • That's a hard one. On one hand it makes sense but on the other hand would subjects in the members only section be duplicative of subjects in the non members area?

By subjects I mean forum topics.

If it were me, I would make a members only section and move the technical forum topics into it and leave the general and non-slingshot forum topics outside of it.

Just my quick without a lot of thinking two cents worth.

Wait. I ain't got two cents, it all went into my last mod purchase. Lol

  • @DocG and @Bill Martin that is kinda what I was thinking.... I can make it where you cant right click or copy and paste in those sections.... Someone might copy the info but it would be a camera taking a picture of the screen if they did.....

Im not trying to be a butt head and hide all the info.... I just think y'all deserve first shot to the info...

If y'all think the tech area should just be hidden from general viewing then that would make it easier on me...

And that may be the best thing to do....

  • Shouldn't the whole site be viewable by members only? I don't see any benefit to having it otherwise..

Well in a perfect world that would be the way to go.... But you don't want that... The site wouldn't get any search engine traffic. And when people did find the site they really couldn't see what was going on....

Yuppers .... passers by should only see the home page and make the (little) effort to join for the rest ....

    Line lock ? ..... Diagnostics pin-out ?

    .

    .

Your half right.... Line lock is one.... The other I was just going to show off in Maggie Valley but I cant do that to everyone... Any more guesses???? NO,,, KENNY DO NOT SPILL THE BEANS!

  • Just an idea - member only access to the Tech section then set up different topic headings like electrical, mechanical, wheel & tires, body etc. then you could start threads under the specified topic heading. Seems like that would make it easy to look for things. Don't know how hard that would be for you or even if that's a good idea.

  • I see what you are trying to accomplish, but I have one small concern. In the near future, I will be handing out business cards that lead interested parties to Slinshotinfo.com. Will those people be restricted from this "Members Only" section? Don't get me wrong, I kinda' think a "Members Only" section is great. Is there a function or something that would allow the administrators to authorize entry...kinda' like the NSFW section? Just my two cents. @DocG - I got your back...if you still need that $.02!!

  • Thanks @V-SHOT. Lol

However I think it would be an administrative nightmare to authorize non members access to a members only section for something like ten days and then unauthorize them unless they join.

The appeal to join would be to get to the technical and porn forums.

Once they sign up they will see the tech section..... It will be fluid.... But if they just go to the site they will see it but will be prompted to "sign up" to see the content... Something like that.......

  • @rabtech is gonna go high tech... dot matrix printer and ink tank agitator!

As for members only... that's a fine line to walk. The one's I would like to reference are the help sites... search engine finds the original post relating to search query, but answers require pay up or sign up to view. It makes money or boost membership, but neither relate to increased activity.

    Just a thought.
