Today I found the small grease needle that will work to grease the universal joint. It is a Lincoln needle nozzle part number 5803. OReilly auto parts has it for $14.99. I got them to come down to $9.99, price match. Walmart.com has it to order for $6.62. I have not used it yet but I am sure it will work a lot better than the 4 inch needle. The needle is 1/8 inch coming down to a point of less than 1/16 of an inch. The whole thing is 2 3/4 inch long.

OK people, I used the small grease needle with the small grease gun it works a lot better than the large needle. No more fighting to get the grease in. Add the curved extension pipe ( about 5 inch ) to the 3 or 4 inch already on the hand grease gun. Now it is easy to grease the universal joint. Oh, you will need a 1/8 inch pipe coupling to screw the 2 pipes together.

Don't mean to "needle" you about this. You're a better man than I, as I could never get the needle to work without shooting 90% of the grease all over the place. I just ground the crap out my grease gun regular nozzle end until I could get it to fit on there and greased from the top down via the cup holes.

The 5803 needle works perfect, no fighting to get into the ball of the fitting. The needle actually fits in the hole where the ball seal is and you can feel it push the ball down. The large needle is almost impossible to get the grease in the fitting.

Hey Fun - thanks a bunch I am convinced I haven't got any grease it that fitting with the long needle - Just made me feel better
I bought an injector needle and was going to try that next but this looks much better! -
Yea, and this works

I'l have to re-learn the whole grease procedure again- just won't seem right if the first few tries don't spew grease all over the damn place, needing half a roll of paper towels to clean the mess up!

You don't stand a chance if you don't leave an opening - he will make one

Greased mine again today (can blame this thread for reminding me:) ). Anyhow, for anyone that hasn't done it, here's a pic looking down from cup holder hole and another with my ground down connector attached.

Where did you get that end on your grease gun - I have never seen one quite like it......LOL
-
I have a connector somewhere that looks just like that. I ground it down probably 25 or 30 years ago for something that the regular connector would not fit. There are 2 sizes ( OD ) connectors but do not remember the sizes.

I've used the needle for my last 4 u-joint greases. It has always been a bitch to get it to fit without missing from the back cup holder position. Then I saw a thread that said to remove BOTH cup holders. Wow, that worked. Remove both and grease from the front cup holder. Worked the first time because the angle is perfect to get the needle seated properly and you can see what you are doing.

So this is what's being discussed, correct?
-
Yep

Yes, that is the one that works. there is also another which is smaller but I do not believe it will hold up, the needle is too small.
-
This may be a dumb question but what brand and what type of grease you all recommend for the Slingshot?
-
I am using the Lucas Heavy I believe it is called with the temp.rating of around 565 degrees, the rest that I looked at were around 450 degrees. Also using for the axle bearings, that is why I was looking at the temp. rating

I don't think you can go wrong with any decent grease..It's a bunch better than totally dry which seems to be how many left the factory.
