can the exact same starter for the slingshot be purchased @ thr auto part store?
It's the solenoid that's on top of the starter that is erratic in starting up once in awhile- would it be better to purchase the whole starter and not just the relay?

I defer to BKL ...
I forget more shit than I remember these days...
I think it is the 2006 - 2009 Pontiac Solstice.
And thanks to more than a year of Covid and bunkering...
Different kinds of drinks nightly help me forget even more.
Confused.
Starter relay in fuse box...
Solenoid on starter.
Relay would be cheaper to begin with...
Swaptronics sucks for troubleshooting.
IIRC, Polaris bought the complete Ecotec 2.4L motor from GM and then just installed it in the 1st gen Slingshots. Assuming they bought it stock including the starter mechanism, airoutlaw is correct in saying a Pontiac Solstice starter should work. I typically search for parts for a 2008 Pontiac Solstice with the 2.4L motor. As an example, this starter looks like it is the same as the starter pictured as a Polaris part and it's a heck of a lot cheaper - https://www.gmpartsonline.net/…4-gas/electrical--starter. Both the GM parts site and Polaris list the same part number. Remember to check multiple parts sources to find the best price.
On a whim, I checked CarParts.com and found GM starters as low as $83!

I wonder what Polaris would want for the same thing? 🤔
IIRC, the price was well over $400-500. That's based on just 1 seller, so it may not be the best price from a Polaris parts seller. Just checked the same site I did before and the price was $579.99! That's for a new part, not a rebuild.
Any updates on where this landed?
Just Googled and found a 2006 Pontiac Solstice came with the 2.4L 4-cylinder and then Googled for a 2006 Pontiac Solstice starter - https://www.google.com/search?…+pontiac+solstice+starter. Before ordering one of these starters, be sure to compare pics of the selected starter you're considering and compare the picture to your Slingshot starter to make sure both look the same.
I bought a starter from a KIA, but that didn't fit the Slingshot

That's my power unit...
After looking at the diagram of the parts assembly, and the details on the Polaris site, I would say that it is a GM starter. Same part number, same pictures.
Searching the web for the part number, I found them for $246 at O'reilly for a new one, and $160 on Amazon for refurbished.
I installed a new starter from Amazon for $60
The solistace starter worked for me. When you take the intake manifold off to get to the starter you don't need to remove the fuel rod although the manual says you do. Also be mindful there are wires fastened to the bottom of the intake manifold which are virtually impossible to get to. In other words don't just tug out then up unless you want to have a bad day. Once the manifold is out the starter is relatively easy to remove.
