The Infamous Check Engine Light- Slingshot Down

  • so sorry @NatomasSlingshot1 for all your problems. As you know I just disconnected my $2000 turd and have been test driving. I only have 250 miles with it disconnected but no repeat codes to note. I have also isolated the light wiring I did before as well just to be safe. I plan in buying a new radio and also a new stand alone fuse block to remove any link to the ECU for future mods.
Can't remember if you said the disconnected the radio from the ECU and tested.

  • If your dealer is on your side on this case, why not ask him to take a radio out of one of his stock units or demos and try that in yours to see if it is the radio or not (Polaris replaced my radio once already and did not cure the problem and finally authorized the dealer to do that - swap my "bad" radio for their "good" radio from a stock unit. If it corrects the problem, then Polaris will send them a new radio for their until and I get to keep their old one. If it doesn't correct the problem, they will rethink the situation, but already said they are not hopeful that they want to continue (what?). We'll see in 2 weeks when we make the changeover). It may be a way to get this sped up for you as well

    Nobody gets outta here ALIVE

  • Much to my amazement- it appears as though my slingshot is fixed. That's right-seven weeks in the shop- a full 49 days and two loaners later. Apparently, the off the shelf Radio, (not the display or harness, although those both smelt burnt and were replaced), was the issue. My dealer yanked the original radio, the new display and new harness, and replaced all three. Please understand that my technician asked to do this almost a full month ago, and Polaris engineering cheaped out- deciding only to replace the display and the harness. In my opinion, the only reason Polaris authorized this FINALLY, is that I called them again, and requested escalation to a manager. I believe, it was at this point, that they figured they had best go along with the technicians recommendations, or face a buyback. It is a shame that the only way to get Polaris to move on something is to politely threaten them. Make no mistake-I love my slingshot- 14,500 Miles on her, and even though I had loaners....... It was not the same.
What else I have learned during this ordeal:
In my humble opinion, Polaris is cranking these units out so quickly that their quality has gone to Hell in a hand basket. Body panel alignment is atrocious. Maybe I just got lucky on serial number 3541, date of manufacture 2/23/15, but my hood panels align properly, and where the red meets the black just above the Side lights, there is no gap. I had a check engine light for about 3500 miles starting within the first month of ownership that Polaris could never solve, but it finally went away by itself. Like everyone else, I lost hood pads. But that was the sum total of all the problems. I have been a religious about the maintenance, inclusive of changing rear drive fluid, brake fluid etc..... Before all hell broke loose, 49 days ago, my slingshot was perfect. On the loaners: tie rod knocking less than 3000 miles. Body panel alignment on both sucked- Dashboard on the passenger side on one of them-3/4 inches too high. Left turn signal non-functional on one of them. No power steering at the start up-intermittent on both of them. Front end alignment so bad on one of them-it wandered all over the road and was a chore to drive. (dealer laser Aligns before every sale, but does not do so on the demo units.) Body panels had excess flash at the parting line, which was never sanded off prior to painting. One unit-leaking at rear end...... I could probably go on and on. Maybe these two units, which were both 2016 units, were not representative of the Polaris quality- or maybe I am just spoiled because I got a terrific unit.
Now, I will keep my fingers crossed, that this is the end of the issues. (I did, however, have my eye on a 2016.5 White pearl at the dealership- body panel alignment on that one was almost as good as mine...... I was figuring, if it came to a buyback situation, I would just pay the up charge for the white, and could end up as Rabtech's older little sister......)

One more small FYI: dealer charges for this repair-well over $4000 labor, Plus the following parts: new battery cable, new ESP unit, new display and harness, new display harness and radio..........

  • laugh-squared .... sooooo very happy for you. Up until your issue I would have had a hard time believing the radio tie in myself... Let me rephrase that, would have not been very high on my suspect list. Mine is disconnected and want be plugged back into the ECU ever again. Looking for a good stand alone fuse/relay block to put all accessories an a stand alone system. Anything I can take out of the loop that doesn't effect the function of the ECU will be routed through the new block. I could relate up to day 31 but pass that I could just imagine how I would have felt. You handled it with true grace Sir. wink-squared

  • Isn't that the cam sensor code? It unfortunately sounds like you have a different issue like a short. The sluggishness is probably where the ECU had defaults that it was running off of till it had some run data to work with.

the first code I ever got was the cam sensor code. Even have one spare on the shelf. Code never reappeared but did have the same issue (5v ground) that sends you into limp mode just as @NatomasSlingshot1 described. Scarry as hell when pulling out into oncoming traffic when it dies.
@NatomasSlingshot1 did they ever replace the ECU. It could have damaged it as well

  • did they ever replace the ECU. It could have damaged it as well

never was replaced...... she made it about 60-65 miles since I picked up from the dealer, before it barfed. At this point, I am still pretty shaken- don't know that I will ever trust this bike again. They replaced your ECU, and that did NOT cure the problem........

  • You probably need to call Polaris and explain the situation. They will most likely open it again. How long have you been without your slingshot?

just got off the phone with Polaris....... explained that it has been 49 days in the shop. Case was closed. exactly what happened this am, blah, blah, blah. Resolution specialists in a 1 hr meeting...... supposed to be back in touch with me.......requested a "higher-up" but don't know where that will take me. Going to call the dealer in 20 minutes, when they open.....
