Noise from Rear Tire - Cyclic Rubbing or Crunching (with Video)

  • You would know it if there was a problem with the needle bearings, they would just about fall out by themselves. Grease with some high temp grease and put it back together, look at all of them for temp's.

Yeah, that's what I thought. But I DEFINITELY hear the "click click click" of bearings somewhere. I'm going to try to track it down when I put it back together.

Several years ago I gave a young lady Slingshot owner a gremlin bell... All of a sudden, she and new husband were hearing something that they could not figure out. One day they rolled the Slingshot into the garage not 'running' and she was pushing on the side where we hung the BELL on the mirror. All is good.

  • Yeah, got it all put back together. Even took a mechanics stethoscope to both the axle and the angle drive- no noise.

But took it out for a quick test drive and the "wurr" was definitely there, worse when I let off the gas and coasted. I can't pinpoint if its coming from the front or back while driving.

    Any ideas?

  • maybe jack it up and let it free wheel and if you have it safe enough maybe start and put it in first gear and see if you hear something.

  • So, some of y'all heard my rear end at Huntsville. Drove there and back, about 2000 miles round trip. Finally got the SS into the dealer last Friday after waiting a month for the appointment. Got the call today - bad angle drive. Haven't gotten details, but I'm still skeptical. As mentioned, I put the mechanics stethoscope to the angle drive and didn't hear it. Of course, they also told me a new belt! (Even though this one was replaced just 6 months ago.)

Dave@DDMWorks - Got a spare AD laying around?

I know Kevin@ATSS has one for sale, but I think it's a 2015 (before they beefed them up).

    Thoughts?

  • And for the continuing saga . . . '

SS is back at the dealership after just a couple hundred miles after angle drive replacement. Not hearing the bearing clicking or "wur"ing any more - now its a metal screech/twist/stress sound. Been at the dealer 10 days and last night I get the call..... It's the bearings!

WTF!! The EXACT thing I took it in for, that I checked and they say they checked and determined was not it. Now just a couple hundred miles and $2800 later, they are saying that IS it. I'm speaking with the manager today. To be continued . . . .

If you have any mechanical abilities yourself, pull the axle yourself and have a look. If you find nothing wrong grease the bearings and put it back together. Should take you less than an hour unless you have to replace the bearings. Video what you are doing and seeing and Polaris paid for everything when we found out the bearings were falling apart.

Yeah , that's the issue - I did. Pics posted above. They told me that they need to replace EVERYTHING: Both bearings, race, spacer, axle, even the nuts. I told them to put it back together and picked it up this AM. I'll take a look at it myself next week. But I noticed that I did not hear the metal sound driving home.

SS was FILTHY tho'. They stored it outside and there is mud, dirt, and dust everywhere on it. That is the absolutely last time I will ever set foot on that dealership property again. And I'm going to make sure our local SS folks know it.

The belt side bearing is the one that goes and when you pull it out the needles will fallout and you can not be put back together. So if it were bad there is no way they could put it back together without replacing. I have carried a spare for both bearings since 2015 when we started having problems. Back then before the recall I would pull it apart every 5,000 miles and grease. I used the hi temp Lucas grease.

  • So, pulled it apart today. Needle bearing is fine - all needles there. But there is this shim that I didn't remember from last time. And the needle bearing slides out as 1 piece. I'm thinking it's okay - just grease and reassemble.

LET ME KNOW IF ANYONE THINKS DIFFERENTLY.

Oh, and the pulley came off with 1 light tap of the hammer. Means they did not reassemble it with locktite per the manual.

  • I would replace the needle bearing, that loose stuff is the seal from either the back or the front side. Unless you cleaned before the pictures there is very little grease in or on the needle bearing. The 2015-2016 has no spacer. I just looked at my spare bearings to be sure what I was looking at. The double ball bearing on the other side you can also add new grease to. Just take your time and pack some grease between the two ball bearings. There is space between them to do this. Do not pack it full. I have never used any lock- tit on the axle nuts. Take my advice and replace that needle bearing, you do not want a problem when you are on a vacation away from home. The reason that I keep spare bearings was back in 2015 someone lost the needle bearing while in Maggie Valley, it took them like 4 - 5 months to get a replacement. I was putting more than 20,000 miles on Sling I a year.

I agree with you. Cheap insurance and since I now have the tools to do it. But I definitely don't need every single piece - Axle, Spacer, Race, Nuts, etc. F'n stealership. Makes we wonder if the angle drive was really bad.

Oh, and when I was going through it, I found that they cut a bunch of cable ties. My stereo wires were within a couple inches of the drive line.
