sorry dad!
Let's just back off the rhetoric here a bit, fellas. I posted the original link and kinda started this thing up, knew it would get some traction, but didnt want it to devolve into emotional parry-and-thrust.
@Red and @Shatneyman are both LE, as are several others, and then you have jackholes like me who just have strong opinions based on a variety of experiences. We're not always gonna agree, but let's keep the intensity at manageable levels, ok?
and the award goes to
sorry dad!
You know I love you sorry assholes, just don't want any hard feelings over something not related to the Sling.
Now, you do something stupid like switch over to a Spyder, that's a different story!
and the award goes to
And I'm not apologizing for that, it's just a very personal and intense topic for some folks.
I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to bust your balls just teeny tiny bit
but let's keep the intensity at manageable levels, ok?
sorry dad!

These are not my words. Saw them posted elsewhere....but they made me think. I was the target of significant bullying from 3rd grade through high school. This feels like it has some merit to it.
Talk amongst yourselves.
**********
So many experts on school shootings, and they are all wrong... I'll tell you what has changed. It isn't guns. It isn't medications. It isn't violent video games. It isn't about God being taken out of school. I'll tell you what has changed.... Schools cracked down on violence. That is what. They took away the only means of self defense from victims of bullying. The pressure of ridicule, constant daily torture, and never ending bullying builds up over time like a pressure cooker or boiler with no relief valve. They don't fight back because they aren't allowed to. They are not allowed to defend themselves. They aren't allowed to punch the kid in the face who is constantly flicking their ear from the seat behind them, or the kid who knocks them down in the hall for everyone to laugh at. They are not allowed to knock the bullies flat on their asses. The ones who spit on them or shove them in the play ground. The ones who tease them or trip them, noogies, wedgies, and swirlies. They all envoke psycological torture. Sooner or later these kids snap and decide to kill all the f*ckers who made their life hell. That is what happened. School policy against violence is what happened. The ability to defend ones own self no longer exists in school.
I think you have stumbled on to something- the days of “meet me behind the gym after school” are long gone. Most of us here are old enough to remember when 2 guys had a beef the coach had them put on the gloves and go at it until one or the other gave up. It used to be OK to be good with your fists - it takes no great skill or strength to squeeze a trigger. A lot of the new is good but some of the old school sure worked IMO
And more on the "cops waiting outside" story - four of them, the story says.
CNN... That damn headline...
I was "bullied" too... I have to constantly have this discussion about "bullying"...
Fact is, sometimes it's just damn teasing (which I dished right back)... Violence isn't always the answer... Kids need to learn how to cope too...
It is so obvious that the problem is social media and media in general... Not just school shootings here, but now on the opposite side, suicides...
Back before social media and cell phones, bullying or teasing mainly stopped when you got home... Or you could just hang with your friends and not worry about others... But now, we're always connected, so the bullying and teasing enters the home through social media and kids just can't ignore the "likes" someone may have received for talking smack to them, or calling them out, etc... It just becomes a mess from which there is no escape. Unless parents (on both sides) actually parent...
Oh well, I could go on, but I'm on a cell phone, so nah...

Devils advocate here ......
So at 16 (some states 15) you can drive, at 18 you can be tasked with defending all of our rights with the ultimate sacrifice ...
But ...... at 18 you are deemed not responsible enough to drink, purchase a handgun, and probably now a long gun ...
But at 18 you are given the ultimate responsibility .... the ability to vote ....
So which is it .... are you a citizen entitled to all Constitutional rights and protections at 18 or are you an irresponsible child who's rights must be regulated ....
......
.
Well, it didn’t use to be that way. Prior to the 70s you couldn’t vote till 21. Neither could you drink or buy a gun. That changed towards the end of the Vietnam war. In 73 they rolled the drinking (in Texas) and voting age to 18. About the time I turned 21 rolled the dinking age back to 21 but left voting at 18.

I am not saying that what he did/did not do was correct, but, believe it or not, up until a couple of years ago, some police agencies were TRAINED to stay out of the fight until backup arrives. It is possible that he was following his training. It is also possible that the Sheriff just threw his deputy under the bus because he is another elected official and the last thing he wants to admit during this shitstorm is that his deputy was just following his training. Thankfully, we are now being trained to engage as quickly as possible.
That was preColimbine! Since the we train to intercede. Active shooter training is an annual occurrence, at least as of 2011 when I retired
