I also found out that runways are kinda hard to use because of the FAA. I'm sure they have to be notified if someone is using the strip for any reason.

Yes, you'd need one of the groups with expertise (like wannagofast) to set up. It would have to be a lower volume non towered airport with a lot of notice and adequate runway. FAA issues NOTAMs (notice to airmen) when a runway is closed. Runway must be properly marked as closed (big Xs) and the local AWOS or ATIS frequency weather would advise of the closure. Jumbolair was a private field and about as low volume as they come. It's doable but it is a pain and is probably why it costs about 20 times as much as a drag strip.
-
This would just be me practicing. Not an event.
-
I have been on this strip several times with cars and trucks. But I want to make sure I don't get in trouble. Times have changed since I was out there last time. It was in the late 90's. Before they did all those federal updates.
Like I mentioned to the guy that run the airstrip. It would just be me making a few passes. And I would just have 2 camera tripods that were wireless for then start and finish. Not a big mess at all.
-
I need to find an abandoned strip around here. There has to be one close by.
-
You might look closely at some google earth pictures along I-22. There may be a place where there is a stretch of road that was left that is dead ended that would be long enough. Just a thought.

@rabtech back in the early 70's we would go over to Courtland, AL and race on an old runway. That place is probably a sub division now.
-
@rabtech There's an airport called double springs that's fairly close to you and from the looks of it is closed but the runway is still showing up on some sectionals. You might wanna take a trip down there and talk to someone. Sectionals show a phone number of (205) 489-5447 but I would assume that's a county office somewhere that's in charge of it. other option would be to call a trailer manufacturer that seems to be right there on the field. Ask them and see if they can point you to someone. It's econoline Trailers 1-800-628-9748.
-
here's the location to it. Check it out... might be able to make a few runs there.

Yea , that is an active runway. Its about 15 miles from my house. They fly into that airport with a king air and and cj citation. I work for some of the poeple that use that runway.
However I may can get permission to use it ... . I know one end of it is a sheer bluff wall.
3400 feet x 79 feet. That would work for sure.
-
It's 3700 Ft. 1/4 mile would be ok, 1/2 mile leaves a little more than 1000 ft to stop... your call .
-
ooohp.. it's 3400 ft. only leaves you 800' to stop. Das ok.. you have good brakes.

i wouldn't need more than a few hundred feet to slow down from 1/2 mile run. Big brake kit will help. I will ask my friends at Econoline Trailers and see what they say. It says that Rusty Banks is the manager. I may have found a place to play for sure. I am also getting the info for 1m4 which is the Haleyville airport.
-
There seems to be a lot of interest in these 1/2 mile events. I would like to remind everyone that we have an event at Gila Bend, AZ airport coming back in March.
If we want to get a group together, I think it could be a fun time. I am about 99% positive that we could beat up on those slower SE Slingshots and break into the 130s.

Cool Beaners... might I suggest you make your passes so they end on the highway side vs the river there at the end of the runway

Ya'll be cheatin!! No humidity there. You know you can drive through dry air better than you can through rain!!!! LMAO -

Not sure that the picture your lookin at does that runway service. It is a looooog way down from the end of the runway to the water. When you are coming in for a landing from that end of the runway it looks like you are going to crash right into the side of the wall. Not my favorite airport to fly into! LOL
-
I hate that runway. Have been sitting right seat many times headed toward the sheer bluff. Most of the time in a King Air.
-
Here’s the view of runways in my part of the country. We’re up a little higher than you all are .
-
Don't guess you ever experience any cross winds at an airport like that! LOL
