- Color sand/polish.
Painting is 90% prep. I'm sure there are others on here who can pipe in too.

I'm in the process of painting an unfinished rear spoiler that mounts tot he rear deck above the tail lights and it's a PITA to get everything smooth, so I agree the easiest route is to get someone else to do it. Of course, if they don't do it right, you're still stuck.

My process for painting PE and other plastic panels:
1: clean with alcohol
2: very lightly sand
3: flame treat -- you're only oxidizing a few microns for good adhesion
4: adhesion agent (there are several on the market)
5: primer
6: paint
