Could just add some hoops like done on many race cars.But I don't think we have seen a driveshaft or cv joint fail yet - not that I know of anyway
true. I'm just wondering if there is anything to protect the plastic. Had one let go in my Jeep at 80mph. The skid plates took the beating but had some nice dents in them. Would imagine replacing the plastic would be a PITA and not cheap.
Any oil on the ground? I've seen two split angle drive units fail.

I saw the after effects of a clutch explosion in a early Chevy II. The driver was very lucky, it took out the whole floor pan right next to his leg.

Glad to hear the findings on this. I never would have thought it was the rear brake caliper... we learn so much from these issues - time to get back in the Saddle 
Jeep wheel spacers can cause a similar problem sometimes. If not fully seated to the hub it can appear to be tight even down to the proper torque setting but can pop into place and then be loose. Warning labels are required for inspection and to re-torque after "x" miles.
