SLINGSHOTS IN THE ROCKIES,July12-16

  • All signed up!! It's going to be a lonely drive from California without @ivor and @adventure4me. Is anyone else from California attending? @1poser ?

Tony let me know you're route and hopefully I'll meet you somewhere.
Hope Anita can do the same, maybe a Vegas meet?

yes we will be heading there from San Diego

@Cywolv let me know as well you're route and dates of travel, maybe we can caravan up?

  • I like the idea of meeting in Las Vegas. Meeting Saturday night will allow us to take a scenic 3 day drive otherwise we meet Sunday night and drive straight to the event. Any thoughts?

Dang if I wasn't going to be in Montreal for 4 days right before SSITR, I would drive down to Vegas from CO to meet up with everyone.

Actively looking for another sling...It is time...

  • Ok, here's my thoughts @Bugeater @Cywolv
meet in Vegas Saturday morning and start heading north on I-15 going thru Zion National Park to hwy 89 ending in Torrey UT which is Capital Reef National Park. It's 330mi and with stops should take 6-61/2 hrs to Torrey then stay the night.

    7/9/17 Sunday
Torrey UT through Moab ending in Ouray CO hwy 550, another 6-61/2 hr day doing 303mi.
You've done these roads Tony and you know how beautiful they are.

    7/10/17 Monday
Ouray down hwy 550 (awesome road!) to Pagosa Springs 4-4 1/2hrs with stops or really take our time and stretch it out, but Pagosa Springs is a must if you've never been to the Hot Springs Resort! There are plenty of lodging options so you don't have to stay at the resort, but you have to spend time in the Hot Springs!

    7/11/17 Tuesday
Pagosa Springs to Avon Comfort Inn is a 5hr 231mi ride. This'll get us up there a day early or we can stay somewhere else before Avon, but vendors roll in on Tuesday to set up.
Let me know what you think and anyone else is welcome on this journey if you have the time and the Aloha spirit.

  • In Pagosa, you have to eat at a place called The Buck Stops Here. It was hands down my favorite place to eat while I was there for 3 days. Great prices, great food, great people. While I was there I ran in to a couple of Slingshot owners that came up from New Mexico for the day. It's just one of those great kind of places.

  • Hi SSer's; haven't posted in more than a year! How funny! Last summer, we stayed at the Wyndam Resort on the golf course/lake in Pagosa right near "The Buck Stops Here"!! We loved it! Get the fries: they use real potatoes! And the burgers are great! Also, go at happy hour, esp if you like PBR. That's the drink of choice up there, it seems. Also a nice italian restaurant right around the corner from the Buck. We bought "legalize marinara" shirts there for Christmas presents for friends. Should have gotten more.

btw, I am the guy who shot the 20-min video of the fun and games at SLINGSPRING in Irvine, CA last spring (2016). You can see that video (and likely, yourself, if you were there) at:

You can also see my video of the Laguna Classic, shot in the hills near San Diego, at:
    for more, pretty, SS roadwork.
And for you gear heads, there's one we did in Goodland KS, at my HS reunion, called "dragging main," all about old cars ...

So are you guys talking about the Rockies in summer of 2017 in this thread ??? We're still looking to do a LONG SS ride; missed the shot across America last year. But we're looking at a camper trailer and not sure what happens to our SS adventures if we go that direction! But also have film festivals in Denver and Breckenridge about that time, which would be hard to attend in the SS, with all the movie gear we have to take! dangitall. the choices one has to make to maximize retirement fun!

Yep, Slingshots in the Rockies this year is July 12-16. Perfect excuse to come out and check out the festivities. Record footage of the hill climb and auto cross.

  • @Bugeater need to verify with my wife what days off she is getting to determine dates we are traveling I'll let you know

The Vegas detour sounds awesome. we're in El Cajon, too. It might also be fun to spend a few days in vegas on the way...I can get complete, furnished (incl. plates, pots, silverware) apartments at the beautiful GrandView Resort (at the S. end of the strip, next to Southpoint Casino; see online at: The Grandview at Las Vegas) for about $40/night, based on 7-night stay. Even if we stay only 3-4 days, it's still a deal! These rooms are $150 - $250/night on trip advisor in July. We could set it up so anyone interested in joining us would get their own 1-BR apt. We are looking into the same deal in Avon/Beavercreek about 1 block from SSITR HQ. But those rooms in Rockies go FAST! -- Paul Sutton (mugshot)

  • Thanks, buddy! Man, I checked on Vegas and Avon for my timeshare trades and NOTHING is left for the relevant weeks. the first includes July 4 in Vegas and everyone is sold out. And there is NOTHING in the Rockies for the relevant week for SSITR. dang, dang, dang. Only good news is that those film festivals in Colo. are in Sept, not July. So we could bring the SS. And what great footage we could get there!!! So, hey, is there a SS across America this year? I can't find anything. One of the things we had thought about doing was the SS lifestyle idea that we played with a bit in Irvine, but really get to know people, using their sound bytes over driving shots as they make there way on a big trip. Maybe we could do some of that on the way to Rockies? I think I have counted you, someone from El Cajon, and maybe one other interested in caravanning to Colo??? Is that right? BTW, thanks for that footage!

That's great if you take the SS and we caravan up Paul. I gues there's 3 SS'ers down here in SD, @Cywolv and myself that would go to SSITR, he's checking his schedule to see if he can travel on the same dates.
So if you're in El Cajon let me know if you can travel on July 7th for Vegas.
Good to here from you @mugshot.

  • We're pretty open in terms of schedule. The one thing about Colo at that time is it will likely rain every day. so, might be good to take a break or two. I'll look at other places to see if anything is open for a small group in Pagosa or so. But I don't remember it being an easy course from Pagosa to Vail. you'd have to go up the eastern slope and then back across I-70. Or just do the utah route. also might be fun to come back through Flagstaff, where we might find some timeshare trades--or Phoenix, which would have plenty of really nice ones in July!

I have to look at a map and see what routes you guys are talking about. Might be nice to hit happy hour at someplace like downtown cafe in EC. they have $3 pints and $3 cheeseburgers from 3-6 M-F. we could lay out some maps and make some plans--or just eat and drink...

  • I booked the room in Avon starting that Tuesday night 7/11. I have to work on Friday so getting to Las Vegas on Saturday morning will be tough with an 8 Hour drive. We may have to try and meet up with you on Sunday or Monday.

Sounds good Paul, HH in EC is always good, look up LV to Capitol Reef National Park in Torrey UT via hwy89,
then Torrey to Ouray CO hwy550, then Ouray to Pagosa Spring thru Silverton and Durango, then Pagosa to Avon on that eastern route hwy160, hwy285, hwy24 to Avon.

Unfortunately @Bugeater can't meet in Vegas til Saturday night, so we can do a faster pace eliminating the stay in Ouray CO and Capital Reef Torrey UT.
Leave Vegas 7/9 Sunday am to Moab UT 9hrs, doing the same route...
    Monday 7/10
Leave Moab to Pagosa Springs thru Ouray hwy550 7hrs.
    Tuesday 7/11
Last leg from Pagosa to Avon 5hrs
All this is pending on weather which we can avoid if necessary and change our route to get us there Tuesday night. Hope that's good with you Tony?
