Steering wheel question

  • While pulling my Sparco wheel, the black plastic piece, under the main wheel bolt, that the 2 horn wires protrude from, popped out. Suddenly, as this round plastic piece fell to the floor, from it unraveled a long, white, flat spool of material that was wound around the underside of the black plastic piece. The spool was attached to both the plastic piece, and the steering column on the right. I wound the material back on as best I could and managed to put it all back together and re attached the wheel. My question is: Does anyone know what this spool is? I'm a little concerned, because now when I'm driving and turn the wheel to the right, I hear a slight "click" sound from the wheel, like something isn't quite right or lined up in there. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Mine fell out and when I replaced it, the horn would sound constantly with the key on so I took it back out and chucked it. When I get around to it I will put a momentary switch on the side of the steering column for the horn. I don't know if anyone has successfully put one back together. Most buy the replacement part dangerdarrell mentioned.

  • I haven't had to deal with the clock spring yet, but if I did do a steering wheel change and it got damaged I think I would just leave it out - - heck with the stock horn I can probably get more attention by just yelling and cursing at people who cut me off 8o

    I actually put my first one back together and it worked for a short time. Got the dealer to replace it. Second SS I just bought the Dorman.
