Here's is a shot of the grease zerk I added, as well as the cut down belt guard. I also threw in a pic where, hopefully you can see the metal flake in the paint job.
Grease zerk, and guard

Pardon my ignorance, but are you supposed to grease that area regularly or is it one of those 50,000 mile maintenance things?
-
Originally, there is no way to grease the axle needle bearings, or either axle bearing for that matter. The only remedy is to install a zerk on your own.

Is it feasible to just drill the hole and tap it without disassembling (have to vacuum out the shavings)?
-
Not really, you have to drill through the housing and make sure you get the exact center of the bearing. The only way to be sure where the center of the bearing is, is to measure from the outside edge of the housing to the side of the bearing that is already in there. I would like to think that the measurement is the same from one SS to the next but ,I really don't have much confidence that it is. Sorry for the long winded answer

Thx for the info
