I guess 40 years isn't a long time to some people.
compared to the 210 years, just in the USA alone, that it didn’t exist, yeah it’s would be considered somewhat recent.

police simply by the nature of the job would be buried in never ending law suits if there were not any protections
Right now you complain about the quality of some of the police that we have, and I agree that there are some bad apples, but if you eliminate qualified immunity its not going to get better - - its going to get worse - good people wont want to be cops, they wont want the risk of never ending law suits and the wont want to subject their families to the added stress of knowing you will be taken to court for absolutely anything that causes the slightest scratch on anyone
Please think about this - did you know a Dr who delivers babies is subject to liability until the last child they deliver reaches age 18? did you know that in order to be protected they have to maintain liability insurance for 18 year after they retire because of this? - - so now tell me if a cop has to maintain their own liability insurance how long after retirement will they need to keep that insurance just incase some one with a past injury decides to litigate?
and most importantly how much to you think a police officers pay will need to be increased in order to cover these insurance costs??
I know you NEVER actually answer questions but please think about it - - what would a police force cost the tax payers if every cop had to buy liability insurance? - - The tax payers are going to pay this cost - - a cop that you might now get for 60k a year is going to need - what 100k? - not only has to cover this years liability insurance, but also has to cover insurance for after he leaves the job - as high risk as police work is insurance could cost even more than the base pay!
do you really think we can sustain police forces where every officer is paid the same as a medical specialist?
this is the point of qualified immunity I think you are overlooking - by having qualified immunity the government can drastically reduce the cost of maintaining a police force, they can hire police officers for a much lower wage and drastically lower the costs to the tax payer. If every cop needs to maintain their own liability insurance they are not just going to take a pay cut so they can buy it - - they are going to have to be paid enough more to cover it and the tax payers - you and I - are going to pay for it
Cops are paid as much or more that many health professionals. The system seemed to function pretty well prior to qualified immunity cam along. How much of a budget reduction could most PDs live with if they weren’t paying out massive sums in litigation for the crap their cops pull? Hint: it’s a lot!

so tell me how many cops on the beat get paid what an OBGYN makes? or perhaps a surgeon?

Slingblade - I will ask again as you have avoided my question twice previously. If you were in charge of “fixing” police departments across the nation what would you do?? In a debate you need to have ideas with sound reasoning - not just old tired rhetoric.
Let me help him:
Step one- Post hateful things about the police on social media.
Step two- post more hateful stuff about the police on social media
Step three- repeat until bedtime.
