Boss audio unit slingmods

  • Yes I just put one in. Is this the one you are inquiring about? I started a thread a month or 2 ago and had some good feed back. I am happy with it for the price. There are many good brands out there like with all things people either liking it or not . There are many questions to ask like wiring mounting bracket speakers Amps… At first someone said to get an amp with it that was a question I asked so I wired for one just in case. At first I thought it had good features and sound. I think I gave it a 2 part review well at first when I turned it on it sounded great I took it out for a few short drives and my opinion changed not about the boss but about I sure was happy that I listened to whoever it was that said go with a amp. Sitting there in the garage or at a slow, not to long of a ride the sound wasn’t there as I said glad I wired for it I went with the kicker amp kma360.4 and also added kicker 6.5 hump speakers and that turned it into another sound altogether. I hit 1 heavy down pour and had no problems with it, not to say they all maintain the same level of quality control. So went another over board with the answer yes I like it. And other questions? Because I know by the time I was done with the install I had many, but being as it was a new product it was hard to find a lot of info on it. And only a few people answered to the thread and as I said they were all big help and I thank them again.

  • IIRC, some owners have reported humidity showing up inside the display. Not everyone, but it has been reported. I've tried several different round marine radios and have also experienced or read complaints about humidity affecting the display with those units, too

  • I believe you have to hook up into CarPlay or android auto for maps. I really haven’t had much seat time with it as to play with all the functions. So here are the pics: the 2nd pic is a Bluetooth controller that I put on the e- brake but you can put it on the steering wheel which I found to just be in the way. Hope the pictures help if not and you want me to take another pic let me know.

  • it’s been in between 80 and 95 for the last well if you can find my post as to the install since then 70 to 98 percent humidity. And I haven’t had an issue with any fogging or moisture problems. And when I tell you with my luck seems like 60 Percent of the time I have to return the product whether it be broken defective wrong product you get the point but knock on my head I haven’t had an issue so far with the unit. Maybe someone that was Competent that day built mine.

  • So I don’t have to touch the screen searching for the volume they are pretty small and takes a second or two to scan in on sometimes I was hitting the wrong button like when hitting a bump in the road. Plus my eyesight is not as sharp as it once was can’t see things sharply a foot or two away. And I did see a eye doctor last year he said I just need cheater glasses, so back to the controller it easy to reach the e brake and the buttons and I can control the volume and go forward or backwards to the next song. More for the volume though. It was cheap $17

  • That’s another good option, just trying to poke at the screen with your finger when trying to concentrate on the idiots in front of you and not being the smoothest driving vehicle on the road ( CT roads don’t help any with a pothole every 50ft) I found myself sometimes hitting the wrong button.

  • The GPS can be controlled from the Boss radio. But that’s why a lot of cars now have volume and “Previous / Next” buttons on the steering wheel, so you can fiddle with that without taking your eyes off the road. Anything more complex than that should be done while pulled over.

  • I installed this Boss head unit over the winter. Install was a pain in the ass with the Scosche din. Fortunately, snother member wss installing the same unit as I. He had to cut/trim the Scosche din to get the Boss unit to fit. I followed his instructions was was finally able to complete the install. As far as appearance, it's great. But now the not so good news. I was able to get on the road today 3/18/22. The sling was sitting in an unheated garage in Maine for a few months since the install. Hitting the road I found moisture had accumulated behind the screen. Driving for 3 hours did not get rid of all the moisture. But more concerning is the screen was virtually unreadable most of the time due to the sun. The Scosche Visor looks nice but is useless. I'm now on the search for a head unit that one can read in most if not all sn situations. I did pump the screen up to its brightest settings but that did not help. My recommendation is DO NOT BUY

  • Sorry to hear, believe me I know the time and effort that you put into it because I was there twice. First time I decided not to put an amp in just to take it all apart again to add one afterwards. So far the screen is still working I took it out the other day for the first time since I put it away for the winter. Being that it was sunny and around 56 degrees was enough of a reason for a preseason drive. I believe that someone needs to come up with a fully reliable head unit, after all we are in the age of technology and waterproofing for most things have been accomplished and secondly the glare issue is another issue that being set at the right angle and screen coating would seem like another easy task from the minds of MIT scholars which given the chance I believe they could build one that Would withstand the depths of the Marianas trench.

  • I have a relatively cheap, Lanzar Waterproof Marine Stereo Receiver in Black. It has AV input, although the resolution is only around 240x400+/- and I still haven't attached a rear camera. Mine is Black, but Amazon still lists the White version for just over $85 (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B013ALB3SI/). While it is currently listed as Temporarily Out Of Stock, I went ahead and placed an order for a new unit since my now 5-year-old unit has some moisture inside the display. My old unit fogs on one side but is still easily read at night or when sufficiently shaded from bright sunlight. I fabbed a mounting panel from 1/4" ABS sheet and drilled holes to attach it using sheet metal screws to my Base model's cubby hole. The Lanzar radio has one drawback in that the remote control is needed to activate random play and several other options, but at under $100, it's not too painful to replace as long as it remain available since it's an older product from at least 2015 or so.

Here's an old picture showing the lower section of the mounting panel I made -

I plan on fabbing a new panel so I can move the Boost Gauge back to the mounting panel since my newer Shade with beverage holders blocks the view of the Boost gauge near my key switch.

For those who want to get fancy, I had my first mounting panel, designed for a different round radio, cut from a 1/8" thick aluminum sheet by a shop with a water-jet cutter, but I found the 1/4" plastic sheets much easier to fab myself as I experimented with different radios and layouts. At one point, I had a round marine radio, digital voltmeter, boost gauge and a round storage hole for eyeglasses or a candy bar all in the same panel roughly 8" wide x 5.25" high, but the shade makes it hard to see anything mounted in the uppermost portion of the panel.
