Reduces the chance something will get kicked up inbetween the belt and the pulley. I have taken them of motorcycles a couple of times.
I am sure it helps a bit, but considering the guard only covers the outside and the side toward the tire is wide open I suspect its there more for looks than protection
Display Morethat didnt take long - - found two screws for the holes on the side and used the original screw for the hole on the top so I went ahead and took it off

Paint screws a matching color and attach.
