FL riders - Lightsey's on the Okeechobee closing ....

  • We went on a little 250 mile ride around the lake today and like usual stopped in at Lightsey's for a down home FL lunch. On their menu board was an announcement that after 30+ years at the public marina on the lake they are closing and moving into town. Their last day at the marina is Fathers Day.

For those that don't know Lightsey's sits right on the Lake Okeechobee rim canal and has been a biker friendly ride destination for a long, long time.
Its far from fine dining but it is damn fine south FL cooking. Local fresh and salt water seafood, hush-puppies, sweet potato fries, slaw, gator tail, catfish, frogs legs, and even local Cooter on the menu. Not to mention the blueberry cobbler served in a big soup bowl.

Turns out that Guy Harvey is building a resort there and the county mandated the closure ..... Guy Harvey resorts only wants their own restaurants in the general area. Okeechobee needs the money but its another case of a local landmark being pushed out. Yes they will still be in business but it won't be even close to the same in town.

So if it is a place you have gone, or wanted to , you have until Fathers day and that's it. Wish I had known sooner, its a nice park, with a huge lot and marina. Would have been a great place for Slingshot RTE. Been there with other groups and more times than I can count as one of our favorite rides.
