I noticed this diagram shows the wires for the rear speakers. Has anyone tried connecting those with RCA's to an amplifier? I may have to try that one day if I can find them.

Good question I never even noticed those. My amp output has rear so I just ran some new wire to my side pods as the rear.
Unhooked the junk midranges and tweeters on the factory front pods. Doesn't seem to be any distortion now. -
What gauge is the speaker wires?

When rewiring speakers, use at least 18 ga wiring. 16 ga or 14 ga is even better and should meet most needs unless you're running very high power amp or running speaker cables over very long distances.
When using speaker cables, the Negative side will usually have black or dark insulation or may have a copper colored wire or a little ridge along the negative side of the speaker cable if the insulation is clear. The Positive side will usually have red or light colored insulation or sliver colored wire for clear insulation. TBH, you can connect either conductor to the Negative output as long as you consistently connect the same color/marking to the same terminal. If you end up crossing your cables and end up connecting a speaker with negative to positive and positive to negative, you'll end up with muddy sounding music. Once you find the incorrectly wired speaker and switch the connections, the muddiness should disappear.
