Soon this little guy will be off to explore the world. At 10 to 14 weeks of age he/she will fledge and leave the nest at which time it will probably spend 4 to 12 weeks staying in this area after that it will take off to find its own territory. Past Southern California fledglings have been seen as far north as British Columbia and as Far East as Yellowstone

Quick update - the chick has been named - People were allowed to submit names for consideration and then the name is selected by a local class of third grade students - - - - Introducing
Spirit
That's cool. Spirit is the name of the bald eagle that Auburn just retired from the flights before the football games. She is 26 years old when captive eagles usually only live 16 or so years. Auburn hosts the Southeastern Raptor Center where they treat and rehab eagles, hawks, etc for release back into the wild once their injuries are healed. The ones that can't be released back to the wild end up living a comfortable life in the raptor center. A few lucky ones become the unofficial mascot for the university and become house hold names.

me too - that's how they have been doing it for all of the Big Bear eagle chicks in the past - - what I don't like is that they require a $10 donation for each name you want to submit - and there is no list of names already submitted so you could easily pay the $10 to submit a name that someone else has already submitted
don't get me wrong I think the friends of big bear Valley group is probably a very worthy organization to donate to, but I don't care for the way they require a donation to submit a name. in the end though its probably a good thing as it kept my entry off the list, I dont think the third graders would have picked ShitHead anyway

I was talking to the moderators of the eagle camera yesterday and asked if this chick / Spirt, will hang around after it learns to fly, They said that it may well keep coming back to the nest to eat and sleep for several weeks before it leaves the territory - - they said it pretty much depends on the parents Jackie & Shadow - - if they keep bringing food back to the nest then their kid is likely to stick around (sounds like my kids were) - -- I asked because I was wondering if some morning soon it will simply be gone not to be seen again (on the camera)
