The biggest problem with lead acid batteries is using tap water in the battery's. Use only distilled water. Also you need to check the levels and top off on a regular time frame, even on the so called mainteaince free batteries
I always use distilled water and service at least once a year but what about checking maintenance free batteries? I didn't think they could even be opened but I haven't tried or closely examined one. I figured maintenance free meant maintenance free. Flooded/maintenance free is what I got for the Sling in a group 26 (deka battery for $85).
I am in the process of converting my motorcycle battery to a car battery now. I have many years of experience with motorcycle and quad batteries and they simply fail too often and without warning (Dammit! It worked yesterday!). I don't have much for electrical mods so that was not part of my decision. I expect to get 3-7 years out of a car battery and 1-2 from a motorcycle battery.
I don't think I've ever replaced a functioning battery. I have a 'party 'till you puke' mentality. That being said, when my truck batteries went bad a couple months ago (2013 and 2014 batteries), the starter slowed down and told me I had a problem, and I replaced them before being stranded. You will not see this with a motorcycle battery - they just quit.
I just know that North Carolina posted speed limits in the mountains, you can double easy around the curves with the Sling. "EASY" (25 mph posted = 50 mph EASY) Do not try that next 5 mph unless you know what you are doing.
Same thing here on our mountain roads in Washington - until it gets down to 15 mph. If it says 15, slow your ass down!
Yuk is all I can say. This will be the first shit storm to hit. Oh can wait for spring lol and winter just got here. Wood stove is fired up yesterday for the first time and the driveway is full of wood. Good thing for the big tractor and 4x4 truck
This always cracks me up.
Now that's purdy. I finish off with moly lube
I used a lot of that when I dated Moly...
Display MoreI also have to wonder if a time comes where the majority of cars are electric what will charging stations want to charge per kWh
once this is not the novelty that it is now I would I would expect that charging stations will be businesses just like gas stations are now - - how much will these business add on to the price of electricity so that they can make a living
and at that point when the electric companies know you are charging your car at home will they start adding electric car surcharges and taxes?
I also fully expect that all of the state and federal gas taxes will need to be made up some how
right now electric is much less expensive than gasoline, but will it really stay that way for the purpose of charging cars if and when the majority of cars are electric?
I seriously have my doubts
All good points. Especially that one.
Agreed, good thought. May work now as it's on a smaller scale. What about if its mandated? Hopefully our government will allow choice. Not so sure anymore.
Hopefully it will be regulated by the free market. If our govt gets involved they'll totally f*** it up. Hell, in Washington State, when they mandated a certain percentage of our electricity come from renewable resources, they determined that hydroelectric, which we have a lot of, is not a renewable resource. WHAT???
I can see it now. Turn in your ASSAULT weapon and move to the front of the line. Vote Republican and 'No electricity for you!'
To anybody who hasn't read this thread, start with post #9, work your way up to see what Ruptured Duck is talking about, then let me know if you were excited or disappointed.
I am curious about how much real estate will be necessary for charging stations. If this infrastructure is built like our interstates, much of it will be a step behind actual needs. Need a 4 lane road? Build it and by the time it's done a 6 lane is required. Perhaps this will be taken into account and they will overbuild for current capacity requirements, but if not, as the market expands, you may pull into the charging station for your 20 minute charge and find yourself in a 3 hour line. (I'm just old enough to remember the lines at the gas stations in the 70's when the oil embargo hit.) Now your 12 hour trip that takes 14 hours becomes 24 hours. No thanks. Probably some genius will create an app where you can reserve your spot ahead of time with your phone. Hey...…...did I say that out loud?
If it feels bad don't do it. If it feels good do it twice.
Just to clarify, I mean San Diego, not South Dakota .
I thought you meant South Detroit.
Might I suggest a few upgrades??
Now there's some chicken soup for the Slingshot owner!
I have a 16.5 and the input seal on the angle drive leaked when I bought it new. The seal was replaced during 500 mile service. It started to leak again around 20,000 miles and again was replaced under warranty . At 32,000 it was leaking again, this time they replaced yoke and bearing as well as seals. I've only got about a 1,000 miles on the current repairs but can tell you that every time that it was taken out and taken apart it sounded different when it went back in. Mine also always made the most noise on deceleration. Currently it is the quietest that it has been since I owned it. The previous time it would really howl on decel. My point is it makes a world of difference how these gears are setup. I've got the original gears but they sound different with every rebuild. I'll be happy with it as long as it stays dry . If it leaks again I'll be
campaigning hard for a whole new angle drive . Hope you figure it out
I had a much different experience when the angle drive leaked on the 16.5 I bought new. There was no gasket on mine, just RTV or whatever sealant they use to form a gasket. My dealer told me that the cause was likely poorly machined surfaces and Polaris simply replaced it. I think it was only around 3,000 miles or so. I didn't consider my drive noisy (after significantly loosening the belt from the way it was delivered), but the new drive was definitely more quiet.
As a side note dallen1059 , when I took delivery of my Sling the belt was so tight it squealed like a cut pig and felt like it was actually binding when I drove it. The first thing I did was loosen it and I didn't feel like the noise was at all obtrusive after that. One should realize that it is a machine with an open cockpit and you will hear the machinery when it's working. It's been said before, if you want a quiet ride, buy a (insert luxury vehicle of choice)!
I don't have experience with boost, you have heard from our two resident pros and other users, and I'm sure more will ring in. I just want to say I applaud your response to a life-changing diagnosis and, I'm sure, a major shock and change to your outlook on life. I would like to think I would react the same but no one will ever know unless they are in a similar situation. Like you and many others, I've always had the attitude of do what you can while you can. Life comes with no guarantees (or extended warranty) and you get from it what you take. My opinion, for what it's worth, is do what the heart wants. This is your show and you get to write the script. God Bless you and your family and we'll all pray for your ongoing health.
Let's Ride!
Well samowens44 you are leaving behind a tremendous body of work that will continue to be useful to all Slingshot owners for years to come.
Now you don't seem to be the type to watch the grass grow so please keep us posted on your next adventure(s)!
And thank you sir for your dedication to us, the owners.
Three words I did not hear on Halloween night: Trick or Treat!
Why do you even do this?
It became a form of entertainment a while ago. Way better than getting frustrated.
I actually invented simple accurate asshole test many years ago.....
if you say to someone “you’re an asshole”....and they get mad or offended.....you found one.
Man that pisses me off!
