Military use of General Discharge Under Honorable Conditions

  • I just read an article on NPR - Senators, Military Specialists Say Army Report On Dismissed Soldiers Is Troubling : NPR about the results of a study the Army performed on its use of General Discharges Under Honorable Conditions for service members who may have experienced PTSD or Brain Injuries. While the Military considers it to still be an Honorable Discharge, such a discharge results in loss of GI Bill Benefits which many service members enlisted for in the first place and many employers view it as a less than Honorable Discharge and won't hire such vets. A law was passed back in 2009 to ensure that such service members received due consideration of possible traumatic experience when they are considered for anything less than an Honorable Discharge, yet it is apparent that all-too-often, these conditions are NOT being properly considered.
I find this article to be very disturbing. The Army says the law only requires them to consider situations w/in a 2-year period while experts say such conditions may not manifest themselves until even more time has passed. It is a travesty that service members who have problems after experiencing possible combat-related trauma are not receiving better treatment. It is far too easy to just throw them out. These people have already experienced combat conditions/trauma in service to the USA and deserve better treatment.
While this article singled out the Army for its handling of these situations, I am sure the other services probably have similar problems. The armed services may be meeting the letter of the law, but they are certainly not meting the spirit of the law.
Please contact your US Senators and Representatives at Elected Officials | USAGov and request they look into modifying the law and ensuring that any traumatic experience such as combat or diagnoses of PTSD and related conditions that can affect a person's behavior not be restricted to a relatively short-term time period and that our service members receive due consideration and respect for their sacrifice.

  • We have been treating our vets badly all the way back to Vietnam. I'm sure we all have or had friends that were scarred for life from that war. I hope if Trump doesn't keep but one campaign promise it is to take care of the brave Americans that sacrificed so much to protect our way of life. @BKL you can believe I will be contacting my Senator regarding this travesty. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I might not be right but I can sure sound like it
