    From the Owner's Manual:

    Electronic Stability Program (ESP) Switch

The ESP is active by default. This feature helps reduce the risk of accident by providing traction control and stability control. If ESP senses a loss of stability due to loss of traction (skidding) the ESP intervenes by automatically applying brakes to one or more wheels and reducing power to the rear wheel.

The electronic stability control system does not compensate for, or reduce the risks associated with:

    • excessive speed

    • reduced traction on rough, uneven or loose surfaces

    • poor judgment

    • improper operation

    hydroplaning

when hydroplaning the tires are floating on the surface of the water and have no contact with the road. I wonder how traction control could do much of anything in this situation.

The ESP system works by applying brakes, but, just like you say, in a hydroplane situation, since the tires are no longer in contact with the road there is nothing to grip. So, if I understand correctly this "confuses" the ESP system and it may very well compound the problem by applying brakes to the wrong wheel(s.)

Now that the SlingShot has been out long enough now for some folks to get some real seat experience, I would like to discuss when to NOT use the traction / stability control? We have had the Grasshopper sneak out from underneath us only once with a hydroplaning situation on the Interstate and, man, that can really get your attention real quick, lemme tell ya! Fortunately I was able to keep it shiny side up with no added impact modifications. Since, I now turn off the traction / stability control when there is a chance of experiencing standing water at highway speeds. In other words when conditions present the opportunity to float a little is possible, I turn the traction / stability control off. Do folks here concur and what other advice does anybody else have to offer?

I have the Federal on the rear and really like it. Only get about 7-8K out of it but I like the stickiness and the look. Will probably go with the same in the front with the 215 or 225 50 17 as this seems to be the max width I can go. I have the original tires on the front so16K on them is good but they should have been done 500 miles ago ...

That is interesting where the Federal 595 was on our short list, but Les Swab actually talked up out of choosing it, thus we went with the BF Goodrich g-Force™ COMP-2™ A/S, and, so far, it has been an outstanding tire, especially when it is wet and cold.

(Kenda on the right and unmounted. Yes, they are both 225/45R18 )

This is an interesting comment Bill. As you know I recently acquired the MeanSling top and while I agree that it provides some shielding from flying debris I personally think it drastically increases wind & road noise by focusing the wind and reflecting every little sound back into the cockpit - - I find it much easier to hear my radio and talk with the top removed - perhaps it is the difference in our windshields :/

From this earlier thread: MeanSling Sport Top first ride

"Yesterday we took the Grasshopper on it's first longer ride with the Sport top, about 90 miles to the coast at 55-60 MPH on twisty roads, where it didn't start out all that great. We actually pulled into a rest area after about 60 miles to see if we could find any ear plugs lying around from when riding with the original Polaris windshield, the wind noise was getting to much for us to bear. Well, we couldn't find any ear plugs, but just for experimentation I took the front of the top from it's highest setting, down to it's lowest setting, essentially lowering the front of the top to narrow the gap with the top of the wind shield, and we continued towards the coast. Within the first couple of miles Justina and I were looking at each other in total amazement where just by that few inches we went from barely hearing each other even with the head sets, to a very comfortable ride, turning down our headsets at least half way or better. Out on the coast road we were able to crank it up to around 80 MPH and the ride remained just as comfortable.

We still think we'll remove the top to do most of our sightseeing, but for those longer rides, and the still yet tried longer rides in the rain, going from point A to point B in an expeditious manner, it appears that the top will make the ride a whole lot quieter and thus less fatiguing.

An added note with the top at it's lowest setting it does decrease the wind noise on the highway, but it also makes it a real challenge to see the overhead traffic lights in town. But then, MeanSling provided for lots of easy adjustment options with the SportTop so that it can be customized for individual situations, some within minutes right on the spot.

I found out that about every 6 months I had to do that. That was why I installed the Optima Group 25 battery with the dual terminals, hopping that I could be done with the corrosion

It is sneaking up on four years old now, so when this battery finally gives up the ghost then we will be replacing it with a maintenance free battery.......................

    Bill

No, each of the 4 parameters can be set independently of each other. Distance, Fuel, Temp, Time.

Well I'll be, when I went out and actually followed the instructions you are correct Slinglow, thank-you for the correction. :*

(Now to remove the battery, top it off and clean up them terminals!) ;)

    Bill

I was pleasantly surprised that removing the battery wasn't as difficult as I had imagined, but once removed I found the terminals to be very corroded and the water levels very low.

    Bill

    (2015 SL with full-sized, non-sealed battery)

I had the battery cover off last night and noticed the terminals are corroded again so it looks like I'll be spending a wee bit of time this morning cleaning it up.....................

    Bill

If I understand correctly, the SlingShot displays the 12 hour clock in "standard" display and 24 hour clock in the "metric" display, you cannot use the 12 hour clock when displaying metric units, or vice versa?

    Bill

With reading all of the posts concerning the SlingShot and insufficient batteries, If I were to purchase a post 2015 SlingShot I believe that the first electrical modification I would do is install a full-sized automotive battery into it...............

(Coming upon 4 years now where the Grasshopper has yet to fail to start!)

    Bill

With most dealers just asking if something will void the warranty will void the warranty....:)

We had a good laugh while once chatting with the service writer of our dealer where he informed us much of their business in the shop was repairing customers DYI modifications. Where, of course, the customer would absolutely deny any responsibility of creating any of the problems themselves and something else had to be the fault!

More seriously, over our four years of reading other owners woes I have become very gun-shy to where either the SlingShots electrical system appears to be very touchy to aftermarket modifications, or where the aftermarket modification itself has created issues.

    Bill

Same as Funinthesun and Shatneyman ...original battery from a 2015 and it started right up... Left it running and took a quick spin around the block.

Add ours to that list, though we do have the issue that it is not a sealed battery thus every 6 months or so we need to check the water level and clean the corrosion buildup...............

    Bill

Will do this tomorrow... what are your thoughts? Do you mean when I put it on the charger or when I reinstall it?

When you reinstall it, if you get a spark then there is something drawing current and then all you need to do is track it down! :)
