The unit itself would make a difference as Scosche did test with a pioneer unit which worked and yours didn't, so it appears to be some differences there.

We also learned this morning that Pioneer System Settings by default have the camera setters are off, did you ever turns those settings on your head unit? Please let us know.

Yes, the settings are turned on in the Pioneer NEX 8200.
I'm trying very hard to assist you and I'm not trying to be difficult. But please know IT IS NOT A PROBLEM WITH THE PIONEER RADIO/HEAD UNIT.

Please re-read my post above. I can have the Radio/Head unit sitting on the bench not attached to the SlingShot and I get no video to a generic monitor that only has a composite video input. That same monitor can be connected to the rear of the slingshot spliced into the video output of the stock camera and I have a video signal from the camera. I connect it to the front wiring and no video signal.

I believe the problem is with the wiring in the 2017 slingshot and changes made to accommodate the 2018 infotainment system.

I'm here to help, if needed.

The stereo makes no difference at all. I can completely disconnect the head unit and use a standalone composite display and get the same results.

You keep saying the problem is with Pioneer head units and its not. I guarantee you 1000% it is not the head unit.

It's a Pioneer NEX 8200, but that makes no difference. Please believe me, do not blame it on the Pioneer.

I can tap into the video signal from the OEM camera mounted into the back of the sling and get video. The signal is not making it from the back of the sling to the front.

Yes, It's connect to the correct plug in the front of the sling in the dash.

Under your backup camera settings you should have a couple options for the camera polarity. Which one did you select? Do not use the Slingmod harness with your factory head unit.

    I choose the battery option.

After many hours trouble shooting everything with the harness checks out. I'm wondering if maybe on the 2017 they changed the wiring slightly to accommodate the infotainment option available on the 2018 and retro fit option on the 2017. I'm wondering that because it acts like the camera is not getting power. When I switch into reverse, the Pioneer senses the reverse and I get a black screen on the Pioneer with the message stating the image may be reversed or similar. So it's registering the reverse trigger.

I wish I knew for sure if the wiring was different. I will probably tear open the back of the sling to get to the camera and check to make sure its getting powered up when going into reverse. I tried gaining access via the shark fin brake light. I removed the top screw and lifted up the light assembly, but I'm not sure how the bottom attaches and I did not want to force it.

No apologies necessary my friend. All mods are not for everyone. This is coming from a guy who purchased Corbin bags for the looks and not functionality...same for the Slingshade. I think it looks awesome and even with the discount the price still stinks. But...I have to piss away my kids inheritance on something!

Sent from my iPad using Polaris Slingshot Forum mobile app

Looks alone, I would buy in a heart beat! I may still, but I want to in person other options. I've seen the Twist Dynamics, I still need to see their gullwing and the Stinger II, I like the fact you can reverse the stinger to open up the cockpit.

    My $00.02 on the SlingShade...

I really love the looks of it and was drooling over it until a dealer had one installed and I sat in it.
Visibility is horrible! The rounded dome which makes it look so nice tucks your head up in it. This really limits your visibility.
Construction; seems very flimsy, looks like the from supports are sandwiched fiberglass, no metal that I could see. When opening the gull wing you push against 2 magnets that hold it closed in the front and rear. When break thru the resistance of the magnets the wing goes up kind of unexpectedly. When it goes up it seem very flimsy.

Please don't shoot me for my $00.02 because everyone's opinion is different. But I was very disappointed with the SlingShade, but it looks awesome.

PS probably is so flimsy because Polaris has weight restrictions as the manufacturer of the SlingShot that they have to adhere to, but 3rd party integrator s / fabricators do not have that restriction.

well have a Pioneer head unit and sling mods told me they have had several reports with the older oem cam wireharness (which I have) and could never get working in my pioneer. When the scosche harness came out i called them and explained to them the $60 harness i purchased a few months ago never worked so Slingmods being the best company ever sent me a free scosche to try in my pioneer. Tomorrow I will install and see if it works.... if that fails, I also purchased a brand new Kenwood head unit that i will install and put slingmods theory to the test and see if it is a Pioneer issue or not.

I don't agree with the statement about Pioneer head units from SlingMods to a point, lol

I installed the harness and using a monitor without the pioneer wired in at all it does not work.

With the schoche harness installed then reconnecting the stock radio the BU Cam does not work. It cycles the camera on and off when connected to stock radio, which is strange.

Disconnect everything and go completely stock it works.

I'm also annoyed because they told me the schoche was the same as the 2 separate harness they sell (power & BU Cam) and it's not. The separate harness contains wiring to install an over ride switch to activate the camera, the schoche does not.

I walked away from it yesterday and I'm heading out in the garage shortly to work on it some more.

    Bill,
I've seen your video starting off at lower RPM's with your turbo. The post above references the turbo spooling up after 3000 rpm.

At what RPM does your turbo start making power?
Do you know where the Alpha turbo starts making it's power compared to yours?

I wish I could see a dyno of both to see how the power curve compares.

I'm in the middle of my 2nd/3rd upgrade to my '17 sling audio system...

    • I upgraded the 6.5 speakers in the pods to Focal 6.5" speakers. They are used extensively on MC upgraded stereo systems. Much better but still not producing the volume I wanted. I don't need crazy loud but I want to hear it nicely without distortion. There was horrible distortion (see next item) which may have not been the stock speakers.
    • Wired into the stock radio and added a Rockford Fosgate marine amp not cheap but highly recommended. I did not want to mount an amp under the seat as I did not want to deal with any water problems. I mounted the AMP under the dash. It gets very hot under there and the AMP has built in fans to manage heat. If you put a non fan driven amp under the dash it will overheat and distort.
      • Anyway... the amp has a clipping level detection/setting where you play a 1khz tone over the stereo (I copied onto a USB Drive from the provided CD) and you disconnect the speakers and turn the stereo up till the red light comes on on the amp to let you know that you are clipping on the input coming into the amp from your stereo. The stock radio has a range of 0 to 30, well at 18 the Total Harmonic Distortion is enough to have the red light come on on the amp. So I now know that 17 is my maximum volume from the stock stereo that is within the detection limits of the AMP
      • The 2nd adjustment is to adjust the output of the AMP to either 1%THD or 5%THD, (the output LED will be either blue or red) I adjusted for 1%THD. MUCH MUCH better but still getting distortion from the stock head unit. I use the automatic volume control set to low. It gives me enough volume increase to overcome wind noise and maintain a nice volume setting as I speed up from a stop. As I'm considering the situation as I'm typing this out, the added distortion might actually be coming from the automatic volume control being turned on. (I'll see about testing that and provide an update)
    • I ordered the hoop pods and will be installing them in the next couple days with the same Focal speakers. (I'll return here and update this post with results). I'm going to tie into the LINE OUT (rear speakers) of the stock radio for the Hoop pods and test the harmonic distortion of the line level output of the stock radio. My gut feeling is that the THD will be gone coming out of the stock radio via line level output. But again I'll be back here to update.
    • I'll be mounting a Pioneer NEX 8200 into the Slingshot Double DIN marine cover they are both on order.

I have pictures and notes for exactly how to tie into the stock wiring to add an AMP and use the existing wiring, I'll post that as soon as I can pull it together into a step by step how to. Even though I ordered the Pioneer I'm still going to test and document using the line level output of the stock radio because I'm curious if the harmonic distortion will actually disappear using the line level output for the rear channel. If so, then you can run the line level output from the stock radio and not have a fader for the hoops or just use the line level out to drive the stock / upgraded pods and bypass the distortion from the speaker level output.

I actually find the stock stereo very adequate with the exception of not being very friendly with it's ability to communicate with my phone for phone calls, I understand you can add a headset, but come on. Polaris should have included a microphone in the dash and treated it like a car in that respect.

If you look at the wiring diagram you can even tie in the audio from a stand alone GPS unit into the stock radio system. If you wanted to run a 2nd camera for the front end that could be accomplished also with the stock unit by splitting the incoming video of the backup camera on a switch, then putting the reverse detection wire on a switch as well to turn on for a rear view/front view camera on demand.

I'll be back with more information and updates as I complete my installation.

Did I tell you guys when I was having lunch with Scott Wine a couple months back we were discussing his decision to relaunch the Slingshade and I suggested the windshield posts and leading edge should arch a little more right to left and slope back another ten degrees to match my more aerodynamically correct Nascar Styled Windshields. He said he,d look into it . I think he nailed it, what do you think ? Cant wait to try it with one of my new windshields!

Oh and if you believed that shit about me having lunch with the C.E.O. of Polaris maybe @kenny_h can find me some Irma impregnated swampland ! :00008172:

Where do you get the nascar styled windshield?
