I have to agree, get Sling on a trailer and get it over to Dave!!!!!

I would love to do that but it's almost 900 miles one way to take it to Dave@DDMWorks. I think there's a local shop that could replace the engine for less than the dealer was asking. The new engine from Polaris was around $7300 and labor about $3300. That's totally unacceptable.

I’d still like to know if you ever had any over heating issues. These early slingshots like my 2016 are notorious for getting cracks in the coolant tank and leaking coolant. Mine did this and I chose to install a DDM tank to fix the problem. I could easily see where if left un treated this could cause over heating issues

I never had any indication that it got hot and the coolant tank was never low.

Well, my Slingshot is under my friend's carport and the news is as bad as I was told. I started it up and it's knocking really bad, like 2 or more rods. It sounds like the engine is about to come apart. I checked the oil and it didn't look milky but it was over the full mark which probably means there is coolant in the bottom of the oil pan. I'm thinking this engine either needs a complete rebuild or replaced.

I'm heading back to McKinney today to get my Slingshot. I went yesterday, but the trailer was just a couple or 3 inches too narrow so I'm renting a car hauler from U-Haul. When I get it back, I'm going to call Dave@DDMWorks so he can walk me through some things to check.

I have to admit that as a person who knows very little about such things, I have to wonder how a good running engine suddenly gets a warped head? what exactly has to go wrong to cause something like this to happen? Did you ever have any over heating problems?

I'm still wondering how it just dies...no sputtering, missing, smoking, etc. and has all this damage. Until it died, I didn't have any indication of anything being wrong. As far as I know, it never had any overheating problems. I don't remember if they said it was the head or the block that is cracked as well.

Pull out the dipstick and see if you have a beige colored milkshake on the stick. If you're getting coolant inside the oiling system, that's the first sign of an issue. Without a removal of the head, to say the head is warped is a wild guess. It's just as easy to say you have a cracked cylinder liner or cracked block. But with only 9,000 miles and not being boosted. you'd probably be the first to have it happened from anyone on the forum.

I'm going to assume they checked the oil to say that it has coolant in the oil. When I go pick it up Tuesday or Wednesday, I'll check to see if I can confirm their diagnosis. I guess somebody has to be the first to have their engine destroyed with less than 10,000 miles. I really can't afford a new engine, but it's cheaper than another Slingshot. They did offer me $3,000 trade-in on the 2017 I was looking at, but that would leave me owing about $18,000 on mine plus the price of the newer one.

After talking to the service department at Ride Now Powersports in McKinney, I found out that the head is warped and there's a lot of coolant in the oil. I'm going to check with a local mechanic that I've used before and see how much he'll charge to swap engines. My brother-in-law doesn't have that much time to work on it.

.......betcha theres nothing wrong with the engine and the J-Case fuse in the rear is the issue.....that's my hope for you But in the event you go the DDM route, well you can't go wrong there........Good Luck

It's been running, just extremely rough and making noises and putting out white smoke. I don't know what they did to it at South Main Iron to get it running but I'm beginning to think they screwed it up.

Where exactly is the J-Case fuse located?

    Scanny............

How did you get your SS to Maggie?

I would get myself a cheap trailer, and take it to an independent mechanic with wicked mad skills with GM motors.

Like many guys on this forum.

I find it hard to believe that motor is junk.

I got it to Maggie by driving it. It made the trip to and from with no problems. The first sign of a problem was when it died on me 2 miles from my friend's house.

I may take it to a local shop that has worked on my Avalanche and see what they say about it. I'm going to be able to borrow a trailer to haul it back from McKinney, TX. If the local shop says the motor is bad, then I'll take it to my brother-in-law's and order the DDMWorks engine.

Right now, I'm thinking about buying the DDM Works engine and doing the swap with my brother-in-law's help. This seems like my best option to get a really good engine and get back to having fun in my Slingshot.

I got even worse news from the dealer's mechanics. Without tearing into the engine, the codes and how it ran relayed to Polaris, it needs a new engine. A new one from Polaris and labor to install will run about $10,600. I don't know about any of you guys, but I can't put that much into this Slingshot. I asked about a salvage engine and I was told that they would see if they could find a less expensive engine to replace it.

They have a 2017 Sling, blue, with 22,223 miles for $18,249. I'm seriously considering buying that one and letting the bank repo mine. I know my credit score would take a big hit, but I can't see having over $40,000 in my 2016 Slingshot. I remember seeing a link to a salvage yard that has Slingshot engines. Could somebody help me out and let me know the name of that company?

    Thanks for the help.

Thinking about selling my 2018 SLR turbocharged sling with 9,000 miles. PPR custom seats installed this year, ZZP turbo kit installed last year( all powder coded) custom steering wheel and many other parts. WHATS IT WORTH?

I'd give my left nut for it....if I had one.

Good advice, but would that explain the white smoke? Wait, only the shop saw white smoke. Scanman , if it were me I'd listen to Funinthesun and Dave@DDMWorks and dig deeper. Please keep us posted. I'm smelling a skunk.

The more I've thought about it, the more I don't think it's the head or gasket. I don't think either one would cause it to shut down like it did. I called another dealer (the one I'm taking it to) and the guy I talked to didn't think it was the head or gasket. I'm going to pick it up Tuesday and do some checking on it myself. I have a copy of the repair manual and it has all the error codes decoded. I may even borrow a compression tester and do a quick dry compression test, check the oil and coolant level to verify if it does have a blown gasket.

The only reason I got a quote on the head gasket was because I wanted to know how much that was going to cost me...if that was the problem. The quote was from the dealer I bought the Sling but I'm going to take it to another dealer closer to me...90 miles vs 140. I'll try to keep everybody updated.

Like the others asked, what year Slingshot do you have and is there any forced induction on it? On a naturally aspirated 2.4L Ecotec and head gasket failure would be extremely, extremely, extremely unlikely.

It's a 2016 with 9100 miles on it, completely stock. I don't think head gasket failure would cause it to stop running like the ignition was turned off. I asked if they had done a compression test and he said no. Dave@DDMWorks do you have any ideas of what the problem might be?

The shop called me about my Sling and it wasn't good news. I was told that they got it to start but it wasn't running very good and it was putting out a lot of white smoke. They seem to think it's either a bad head or blown head gasket. I called the dealer where I bought it and was told that to fix the head gasket would be $1800. I'm beginning to wonder if I bought a money pit that I can't afford on my fixed income.

    Holy shit Scanner..............

The last 5 weeks for you have been a bitch!!

    :00007956:

Tell me about it. The only reason I drove it was that I knew it would be well after dark and much cooler. I only got about 2 miles from my friend's house when it died.

You can take the metal cap off the fuel rail (just like on the tire valve stem) and depress the schrader valve to see if any fuel sprays out. If it does, then it's not fuel related and probably electrical. If it doesn't, then check the fuel pump fuse to see if it's blown. If not, then swap the fuel pump relay for one of the other relays (they're most if not all the same) to see if that works. If still no thing, you either have a wiring/connector issue, ecu issue something in the engine management. See if you have any codes set

It's already at the shop and I was told it will probably be a week before they look at it.

I was headed home from a friend's house and as I was going through the gears, the engine died and wouldn't start. I don't know if it lost ignition or fuel but it has about a half a tank of gas. I'm having it taken to a local shop that works on Slingshots. Hopefully it's not too serious.=O?(
