I voted for Reagan both times but the 2nd time I voted for him was quite memorable. It was 1984 & I was serving as a nuke on a fast attack submarine. We had just completed some emergency repairs in Holy Loch, Scotland & were ready to cast off lines topside. Just then, a vehicle came screeching up to the dock with 2 large bags of mail (an unexpected luxury). The mail was quickly dispersed & in it, I had an absentee ballot for the elections. We were again just ready to cast off the lines when I told the Captain I had an absentee ballot. He asked who I was voting for & I told him Reagan. We just caught the vehicle who was getting ready to leave the dock. The vehicle & the submarine both waited for me to fill out my ballot & then we finally got underway! True story.

Tripod, You and I have lived really dangerous times, but nothing we have done in our roles as Warriors is more important to the survival of this Republic than this election. You live in a little more populated location than I, but I can tell you this about the people in my neck of the woods. These people will revolt under Hillary. I am old and slow and, even though I haven't forgotten how to do it, I prefer Revolution to Civil War. I fear, however, Civil War is in the making.

Damn, @Buzzard you have to go and drop Ronnie on us? Did Ronald sound as juvenile as Trump? I wasn't old enough to care back when he campaigned. ;)

You know, Brother Wolf, there were times he made some of the same missteps as Trump along the way to the White House. It was a very contentious time. He was accused of being little more than a chimp and there were folks saying the same things about Reagan they now are about Trump. I might add that I was 100% on board with Ronnie back then and my entire family turned on me. Even though he had been a Governor, he was treated as an outsider and not a member of the "Club" by the elites of the time. That appealed to me as a younger man and it appeals to me now. I disdain professional Politicians. I don't believe it is the way it is/was supposed to be and will accept Trumps short comings.

Totally agree that the US will be unrecognizable under another Democratic Socialist...I have yet to meet a true believing conservative that isn't voting for Trump.
I have met quite a few middle of the isle, mainstream, casual republicans.... I think they are confused as to which side of the isle they work for.

I'm probably older than most here, but I can remember the same conversation and doubt as to qualifications directed at Ronald Reagan. I have few doubts about Trump. I'm totally on board with him.

I have everything on order and will install in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for your very informative help.:thumbsup:

what makes you think QC has been "stepped up? (I presume that you are talking about the SL.) Granted, the first 1000 units were a learning curve for the production folks- after that they were somewhat refining their techniques. My original baby was tight before she went to hell in a hand-basket. While in the shop- I had 2 brand new loaners- horrible quality, IMO. Defective back-up cameras, a LOT of leaking rear seals...... JMHO- the assembly plant has become routine, and when that happens, very often quality becomes lax. In addition, most of their suppliers are JIT- supposedly certified at place of mfg. I would be very surprised if Polaris had a huge Supplier Quality audit team. Again- just not knocking the SL- love the machine, but Polaris seems to be doing more QA/QE analysis after the fact, rather than upfront. Consumer is, and always has been the primary QC department- whether it is Polaris, or any other automotive mfg.

That would be correct. From where I sit, it appears this bunch is doing a pretty damn good job. There are some real thinkers here.

No thunder lost. No expert by any means. Just enough to ask questions. One would think that all castings would be checked. Are they simple spot checking? On my new 16.5 SS i have freaking black sharpy marks all over the darn thing. QC I think has been stepped up so one would hope that includes critical components.

I really don't see myself as an expert, but I was in and around Aircraft manufacturing for many years and saw many of these issues come up. The QC/QE system is pretty tight. In Aviation, Castings get special attention.

Porosity is not good at all and that one is really bad. With as many SS on the road I'm saying it looks to be a manufacturing defect rather than a design. All sorts of causes for porosity that can creep in. I worry about batches and manufactured dates. Everthing from vacuum leakes, humidity, human error and improper functioning equipment can cause this.
That is one big ass cavity.

Don't want to steal any of your thunder, RD, but here is some interesting reading:

Ultrasonic Testing in the Foundry Industry

Thats the second one I've heard of. I would like to hear the full story. I feel there's always some details that are left out. X(

This is the only one I've seen. It has been discussed fairly completely and I would be interested in seeing the Polaris Engineering failure report. If the failure is the result of casting issues as it appears, Polaris will just tighten up their inspection procedures at the source and probably put out a bulletin to the dealers. If we have more failures in the future, a higher level of attention might be placed on the swing arm.

For me, I'm going to ride the crap out of mine and not worry.

I don't think the G-force would break the swing arm, the rear tire breaks traction first unless something was struck from the side. The 2015 Sl models had break away wheels :) .
I see the same area you mentioned which does look like a flaw. It will be a while to hear the final take on this as Polaris will take at least month to resolve.

I'm just speculating on whether the scuff marks could have resulted from the failure of the swing arm or from under inflated tires, but it seems to me their location is unusual. I rode a VTX1800 for years with an automobile rear tire and I would get similar scuffs when my tires were a little under inflated and I would really get into the curves.

On what appears to be a casting issue, we could tell a little more if we could see the fracture more closely. If the failure started at the void, the stress indicators on this metal would be fairly obvious.

I would like to see this swing arm failure discussed a little further. In these photos I see two points of interest that possibly contributed to this failure.

    • I would like to know if the scuff marks on the tire was caused by the failure or were they the result of spinning donuts on a hard surface. If they resulted from high "G" maneuvers, that could have contributed to the swing arm failure.
    • On the lower photo think I see a flaw in the casting of the swing arm. If, indeed, that is a flaw I see, that would be the primary cause of the failure in my opinion.

I sure would like to get the opinion of some of the more knowledgeable members here.
