Turbo Part 2

I think today was a pretty productive day. Started with a good church service in person for a change as we were there for my nieces baptism and then raced home to change clothes and head to my buddy's place! First on the agenda today was to finish the oil pan swap. So far I think this is the hardest part mostly because you need to raise the engine up a few inches to get it out. Bottle jack and some blocks, looked sketch but worked! Also found out pulling the radiator and draining before you do this step is also a good idea as that extra room in the front was a good thing. Buddy had some steel tubing so made for good spacers to hold the motor up making getting the pan in/out a lot easier. I was happy to see no metal in the bottom of the old pan so that's always a good thing!

I've never really looked inside the bottom of a motor. Thought this view was kinda cool and snagged this pic before scraping off the old RTV. If anything I'm learning a shit ton along the way with this install!

Took the opportunity to replace the headlights since I had ordered some bulbs off the recommendation of a forum member here - Thank You! Will be awhile before I can test as have everything disconnected power wise, but looking forward to seeing how these do and at least get rid of that yellow look of the stock ones. I have to figure out what I'm going to do with boot on outside set yet..thoughts? I hear not to use with fans or they overheat? Also since we started pulling hoses anyway, we got started on the DDM coolant hoses too! Red makes it faster right?

Checking over the turbo itself we pulled the oil drain line and was kind surprised no RTV/Gasket between the turbo itself and that line. Buddy made a gasket and if I do have any leaks will pull that and use RTV as recommended by one of you Pro's! Keeping in mind this was a used turbo that came off a slingshot... I had issue with the oil drain line. I'm not sure how it was installed on that sling as I didn't remove but had to really work that line to get it not to kink right at end of drain pipe where it angles down to run to pan. Finally got it, but going to check tomorrow when we have some more light to make sure it's right.

Definitely happy with how the progress is coming along! Should have the PCM back next week and pretty much everything from here is bolt on to finish out turbo and then exhaust! Can't wait to hear this thing run! Hope you all had as productive of a day!

  • On the LED Headlights, just leave the boots off. The fans need to circulate air and boots prevent that. Lights are waterproof anyways so no problems.

    • Sweet - now the question is cut the boot as I won't need it or cut wires and solder them. Thank You for info on boots either way and makes sense!

    • Just get rid of the boot. When you pull the old lights out, the boot will come off the wires with a little bit of effort. I tried to cut the boot to fit around the new bulbs while leaving the fan open but it just wasn't worth the hassle.

  • When it's all done, let me know. I'd like to see the ZZP set up in person. If we have a few good days left we can take a ride.

    • Sounds good man, will do!

    • is this the stage 1 turbo from ZZP? i thought it was supposed to be just a bolt on type setup. I can do a lot of my own work but not sure i want to go through pulling the oil pan and everything else.

    • Yes stage 1. Need to check with Kyle as I'm pretty sure the newest option on stage1 doesn't need to mess with the oil pan. Mine is the older style stage 1 where you do need to modify the oil pan or order the pan with the turbo kit and swap basically.
