I quit smoking on Jan 2 1995. Back then the patch was still prescription and my Insurance covered it so that is what I used. I also got some of those chrome Chinese balls, you know, the ones that come in pairs usually in a box that when you knock them together they sound like bells. anyway I had them in my hand every waking hour - I needed something to keep my smoking hand busy just as much as I needed the patch for the nicotine

Anyway good luck I pray that you make it this time

    Thank you very much

lost some of the mobility because of the two fusions, but you then start to over work the areas above and below the fusion. So now I have some of the pain every day and it can be bad. So I take three hydro codon a day (10/325) one in the morning- one in the early afternoon and one after 8 PM where I can sleep at night without waking up hurting. I do not like taking this but there is no way around it, I have tried. But at least I can use my right leg without looking at it. That is how bad it was before, once the back started hurting, if I did not find something to sit in real quick it would put me on the floor. I am good now as long as I can manage the pain. This surgery was in Nov. 2005.

Wow, so sorry to here about the problems your having. I'm pretty doped up all the time too. Percocet about 5-6 times a day , 105mg of morphine a day, and 900mg gabapenton. I guess that would explain my spelling problems. I wish yoi the best. I know that doesn't help but that's all I can do

Either you want to quit or not. I quit cold turkey after my first triple bypass in 1996. Sixteen years and a day to the second, the average at the time was 14 years. How much more time do you want to spend with your family? I also had two fused (bone to bone) in 2005 3-4 and 4-5 lower I was good for about 3 years

So, what happened after 3yrs? Did you have to get it redone?

I'm not trying argumentive, it just sounded like the e-cig might be the way to go. The VA just called, and they'll be sending me chantex. So I guess I'll be going thst route. Thanks for all the input, it's greatly appreciated. Wish me luck, or will power, or something, lol

The problem for your surgery is the nicotine! You're just delivering it in a different manner. You have to get past this I can't quit thing. I used that excuse for 50 years.

I thought the reason was the carbon dioxide that was the issue. It takes the place of the oxygen in the blood. Your saying it's the nicotine? That could be a problem. But if that was the case, wouldn't the patch be just ad bad?

Reasons to Quit Smoking Before Spinal Fusion

NICOTINE WILL INTERFERE WITH YOUR SPINAL FUSION!!!

Now that was helpful. I've had both of my wrists fused because the RA has eaten away the bones, I've also have had all of my toe joints removed, the joint where the toes attach to the foot, for the same reason. And that's pretty much the reason why my back needs to be fused. The Dr said that they will use rods and screws I know I HAVE to quit smoking, and the article you referenced, helped me understand the reasons why better. Thank you.

You can still get nicotine which is your biggest craving, it also gives you the smoking effect since in essence you are smoking however your smoking food grade liquids not tobacco.
It takes a little bit to get used to them, but once you do you'll not want a cigarette again as they'll taste horrible.

Cool, I'll give them a shot. Thanks alot!!!

Well you just explained your problem. You can't quit if you don't want to. I used Chantix and haven't had a smoke for 8 months now. But I wanted to quit. Started at 35 cents a pack and they went over $6.00. Immediately had over $200 in spendable cash. You might as well forget it if you don't want to do it.

Well, thanks for the positive reply. You're right, what the he'll was I thinking

That's the hard part, I don't want to quit, I enjoy it. I'm a boring person and that's my only vice. If I had it my way, I'd be smoking during the surgery, I hear it goes well with oxygen, lol

I would look into disc replacement before even considering a fusion...

The problem is I have rheumatoid arthritis, so it's more than just missing discs. One of the vertebrate has shifted forward a little more than 1/4".

I guess I never tried the gum, at leadt as far as I can remember. I may have to give it a try. I have about 5 weeks until the surgery, so I'll have to hit it hard, lol

I just got back from the neurosurgeon. Apparently I have to get four of my vertebrae fused, but I have to quit smoking first before they'll do the surgery. I've tried 4-5 times in the past 20yrs, and I keep coming back to smoking. I've used chantex, or however you say it, the patch, but the adhesive gives me a rash, and here I am smoking 2 packs a day. I also have to get my left shoulder replaced, but the VA is going to do that, and they don't give a rat's ads if I smoke or NOT.
Anyways, do any of you have a sure fire way ,for someone with no will power, to quit smoking?
