I agree, so stainless? Anyone? I did have one welder look at it and he suggested titanium....but I can’t see it either. A magnet did not stick to it....so...just want to get the right weld for the material. Anybody know?

Definitely Austenitic stainless steel (300 series) because the Martensitic and Ferritic grades (400 series) are magnetic. Most likely, they used type 304, which is the most common. Type 321 (having a touch of titanium in the mix) can withstand frequent heat spikes above 800°F so that's not likely considering how it's cracking.

I gots no control over that, not my idea, was just telling you guys about it....

Not everyone can swallow a $600 muffler

True. Some can, but not with smile. But a Class Action (CA) suit won't help anyone that bought that $600 muffler, at least not much. Assuming the CA won, I doubt the Class would walk away with more than $100/each and that is being generous. Either way, all the Class members will be taking a loss and an award won't make much difference. The purpose of a CA suit is to punish the defendant for wrong-doing, not to make the plaintiffs whole. Therefore, there is never going to be an award that comes remotely close to covering the loss of the entire Class.

I assumed the mention of a CA was not your idea since you stated you heard "grumblings" of it. No, I only meant that being one of the people affected, and having heard those grumblings, you might want to step in and extinguish the flame before it becomes a fire.

Right now, Alpha has a chance of trying to make things right for the individuals that have been affected, even if it takes some time, effort, and negotiation with the affected customers. They are a small business and probably don't have a lot of cash in the bank, so that may be overly optimistic, but it is at least a possibility.

However, if a CA is filed, that window closes and will likely never reopen. The cost of defense alone would cripple Alpha and any hope of working things out individually goes out that window when it closes. If you have any hope that Alpha will try to mitigate your loss, a CA will take it out of your hands without your consent and the result will be little better than your initial loss.

Alpha has stopped offering the muffler (goodbye revenue) and their reputation is damaged (adios customer loyalty), so they are already feeling the pain on their bottom line. If they can weather this, they may recover and be able to make amends. In the meantime, they have other products that are of good quality that can keep them afloat long enough to fix the muffler problem and possibly replace the bad ones. If Henry is as credible as some are claiming then I think that could be a real possibility. If you agree, then I recommend you try to convince the grumblers to forget about starting a CA and keep trying to work things out. Maybe join together as a group and petition Alpha to open a discussion about reparations, even if its only to repair/reinforce the existing units, like Polaris did with the swingarm recall.

Just my two cents, for what it's worth. ☺️

This is my sometimes co-pilot, Puka. She's a Husky/Corgi mix, so she's a small/medium size Husky (the little heifer weighs 40-45 lbs.) with really short legs. I made a seat for her that straddles the transmission tunnel on the SS and I clip her harness to the passenger seatbelt anchor. Here we are heading out to Bengie's Drive-in movie theater in Middle River, MD. As you can see in the photo, she is actually sitting up, not laying down. Cute a hell, knows how to lay it on thick, and too damn smart for her own good. :o

Can the bracket that holds the caliper on be powder coated?

    RNJ12

Any metal part that can withstand 400°F can be powder coated (PC). Even plastics and MDF can be PC'd. However, it's probably not very cost effective for a single small part unless you have the equipment and can do it yourself. Harbor Freight sells a PC system for $75, but you'd still need an oven and consumables. For one or two small items, rattle can is cheaper and, if applied correctly, reasonably durable.

Alpha and Henry are more than aware of the problem. I have spoken to the one mystery employee and they have relayed all of this to Henry.

Now I am hearing rumbling of a class action lawsuit

Try to squash that one before it gets off the ground. Not many plaintiffs will be happy when they realize their share of any award will probably be less than 10% of original value. The lawyers take their 30% (or more), plus expenses (private jets ain't cheap) off the top and whatever is left gets split among the plaintiffs. Also, if the Class actually won, the financial hit to Alpha could permanently close their doors. Everybody loses... except the lawyers.

You seem to be REALLY concerned about this grease issue. Any particular reason why? Have you called Polaris or your dealer to ask what they recommend? Is there something I'm not getting?

Is that because you’re this guy?! :D

“I've disconnected my home alarm system and de-registered from the Neighborhood Watch.
I've got two Pakistani flags raised in the front yard, one at each corner, and the black flag of ISIS in the center.
The local police, sheriff, FBI, CIA, NSA, Homeland Security, Secret Service and other agencies are all watching the house 24/7. I've never felt safer and I am saving $49.95 a month.”

No, but that is a creative way to save a few bucks. Since my wife is on our townhome HOA board, I could run it up the flag pole (pun intended), but I doubt she'd go for it. You know how draconian those HOA people can be. :whistling: And don't even get me started about dealing with the Architectural Committee... submitting proposals, get signatures from all the neighbors, and God knows what else... ;)

That article is related to industrial equipment and critical applications where failure is relatively expensive and dangerous. By comparison, a basic u-joint on your personal vehicle is neither. Check out this article...

Overview of Lubricating Grease | etrailer.com

If you don't want to read the whole thing, here's the basic gist...

    1. Play it safe and stick with a multi-purpose or lithium grease. You don't need the fancy stuff and the only reason to use lithium is because its white, making it easier to see the squeeze-out.

    2. If you're still concerned about mixing differnt types and don't know what's already in use, pump in enough new grease to displace whatever is currently in there. When you see the new grease squeeze out from all 4 arms of the u-joint, you know you have purged most of the old stuff out and you should have no problems.

your upload speeds are usually much slower then download.

Like me i get 250mbps down but only like 12-15 mbps upload.

Wifi is also a factor as upload and download speeds degrade quickly with distance. Even sitting right next to your router, wireless speed will be noticably less than max. If you're on a wireless network, plug directly into your router with a network cable and try the speed test again. It will make a huge difference.

Picked up two sets of SL wheels over the years. 2015 with like new tires for $600 in Nov 2016. Then a set of 16.5 SL wheels with new tires for $300 just a month ago. The all black 2016 SL set seems to command about $5-600.

The SLR wheels are the only set commanding a premium to date that I know of. Usually around $1k with like new tires.

Considering the cost of a new OEM or aftermarket set, that's still pretty reasonable.

Friday I called up the dealer where I purchased my SS asking for prices and availability for the rear axil bearings. The girl on the desk gave me the prices, and had them in stock. She then said if I made an appointment they would replace them for free and save me the $150 or so. I arrived Saturday to a warm welcome from all the staff and they got to work on it right away. The pulley side bearing was shot, wheel side was OK but they replaced them both. The chief Mechanic told me there was some minor wear on the belt that if I had any problems down the road they would replace it also and made a note of it on his warranty report. I was more than pleased over the entire experience and now will highly recommend this dealer for any of your Polaris needs and sales. They are VOLUSIA MOTOR SPORTS in New Smyrna Beach Florida. My Dealer rating would be 4&1/2 out of five stars.

Sound very similar to my experiences with TRI-COUNTY HONDA (Polaris, Yamaha, Kawasaki, etc.) in Petersburg, WV. It's a long drive for me (4hrs. each way) but worth it. They are easy to work with, very knowledgeable, and have gone above and beyond expectations, both for sales and service. I have 3 or 4 other dealers I could choose within 1-2hrs. from home, but none of them come close to the expertise and customer service that Tri-County offers. I can't praise them enough! If you live in the Washington, DC metro area, give Tri-County a call. You will be glad you did!

If it was running, why did you leave it. You could still be riding while you are waiting on the parts. Recall does not take 3 + weeks for anything. Something wrong somewhere.

Yes, Coleman Powersports is what's wrong. They've tried to convince me that they have changed the way they handle service appts, but obviously that is false. Tri-County in Petersburg, WV, treats you right and as @ethermion says, if you schedule ahead of time, you will almost always be out the door the same day.
