Very true words my friend. I am finding this just as close a community as any jeep, bike family I have been in,
only difference being I feel like a kid again riding in my Sling!

I went to Amazon to check them out as like you suggested and because I like to learn at least one new thing a day. I am more then willing to spend good money for a quality component. I also like to get value for my dollar. I am no expert on heat treating or lug nuts. Although I did stay at a holiday inn... just kidding. When you buy on amazon you most always will find the country of origin where the product is made. If you scroll down to the description it will show you where the product is made. That's one of the things I like about shopping there. While I agree from your link they state proudly on their website they sell American made products someone might want to tell them that amazon has their lug nuts listed as made in China. http://www.amazon.com/McGard-6…694065&ref_=sr_1_2&sr=8-2 BTW, I just looked at their website and they have a disclaimer "This product may contain globally sourced materials/components."

The way it was explained to me was that because of the way the gears are cut they need the sludge to wear in properly. I wouldn't think a company would design a gearbox that way but they do recommend a 50k service and there seems to be many reports on the forums of other issues or leaks with it. We may be the cause of our own misery. Sorry to derail the thread. Should I delete my responses and maybe start a new one on just my question?

I have heard that because of the gear design in the drive that it is better to not change out the oil before hand and go with the manufacturers recommendation. I'm not sure how long a sufficient break in period should be but it will kill me to not change it for 50k miles.

I got my base ss two weeks ago and I have been having a blast ever since. I put a bunch of miles on without the shield and while I enjoyed it I have to admit that it's a much more enjoyable ride now. The bugs were not as bad as the sand blasting for me. Not to add to the confusion of inches mentioned already but I went to cycle springs the other day and had a Madstad 9" installed and I could not be happier. You might want to sit in some others or hit a dealer that has them to get the right fit for you. I'm 6' and even in the highest position I can see over the shield if that helps. Ride safe!

Going through all my e-mails back and forth with Madstad:The 9 inch blade, when it is in its lowest position, sits 5 inches above the highest point on the dash. That is measuring with the ruler flat against the highest point on the dash and straight up in the air. It would be 2 inches higher, when raised to the maximum height.

With that being said, when in its lowest position, the 7 inch blade should sit just over 3 inches above the highest point on the dashboard, and just over 5 inches when at its maximum height. I went with the 7 inch, so that when I raised it as high as possible, for maximum airflow in the summer, I would still be clearly looking over the windscreen. I Hope that helps.

Winner winner chicken dinner! Thanks, that is what I needed to know.

Picked up my base ss last week and have put about 500 miles on with no shield wearing only goggles. If it weren't for the love bugs I would have been grinning the whole time. Never rode my bike without a helmet so the wind noise is BIG in the ss but second day out I popped in some earbuds and amazon music made it perfect. What did we do before smart phones? Only real complaint is the sand blasting from other vehicles. That being said I have been searching the forums for advice and I am leaning towards a madstad 9"blade. I would hate to loose all the airflow with all the heat down here. I haven't had this much fun since I was a kid!
