Ok guys figured I would post an update! New Year’s Day was about 75 degrees here, so we went for a nice ride. Yes I brought a gas mask with me to keep the misses from passing out, to my surprise by the afternoon fumes had reduced by 75-80%? Spent most of the ride thinking about what had changed since our last ride. 1. I think the exhaust that I purchased used but like new had oil, or heavy gas built up inside from previous owner, and it needed to get really hot to burn it all out/off. Misses noted when I first installed it, and took a short ride she thought plastic was burning?? 2. Most importantly I stopped to fill up with good premium gas, since I was down to 1/3 tank. Now here’s the kicker! When we took the initial long ride with new header/muffler and was getting choked out, I had stopped and filled up with Ethanol Free gas at the local station since winter was coming, and I figured it would be sitting for awhile. (Ethanol gas wreaks havoc on boats, and motorcycles) around here during winter. After filling with the premium there was a noticeable difference in the fumes, but at the time I didn’t think about the ethanol free being 87 octane until that night! We still had some fumes, but very minor compared to initial rides!

Hopefully most of the fuming was from lack of detonation due to low octane😳🤔

Weather might clear this weekend so I can ride again, and smell for the fumes! I know several posters had mentioned the gas, but didn’t even think about it.

    KISS Principal at its best...

yeap, nailed it, frustrated beyond belief. I have tried with two different spring tools, a pry bar, a flat carpenters nail pulling pry bar, vise grips, wooden blocks for leverage, and a number of other tactics that have all failed to get the damn job done. and yes the busted bloody knuckles from the hook tool coming off and slamming fingers into other parts of the engine, all fantastic things that I am certain everyone on this forum has experienced a number of times. I have just come to what I believe is my limit on attempts and am willing to let someone else finish the job for a small fee if necessary. I'm there.

Not sure how mechanical you are, but you could have removed the side panel, did the springs, and reinstalled all of it in way less time than it took to stop cussing after busting your knuckles, and driving yourself nuts! Couple of hours and done👍🤪JMO of course.

Brenda will literally get sick from smelling exhaust/gas fumes. So take my word for it that I have never had this problem. The only time that I have even got a wiff of any fumes is coming in a little hot to a stop sign/traffic light with maybe a little breeze from the rear.

    Thanks.

So out there somewhere in the universe there is a setup that will work, at least good enough for me, although I’m a bit particular, I’m learning a great deal about this new beast called a Slingshot😳 I have a few little tweaks I want to make, and we’ll see what happens. I knew that this can’t be an impossible task, but thru trial, and error something would lessen any comfort/drive ability issues. As for all the comments posted to my thread, I appreciate each one, and it’s my hope that years down the road someone will google this issue, wind up reading all these good comments, and gain some knowledge from it! I’ve had a lot of toys I’ve modified, and the different forums I was on saved me much time, and money by learning from others post👍👍

You won't be able to mimic his setup as Alpha no longer exists.

The best advice that anyone can give you is to ride in other people's Slingshots with different setups. We can talk a lot about tops and windscreen impact but the thing we can't do is know how sensitive your sniffer is - you could be like a bloodhound and smell fumes 30 miles away that someone else might never even notice

I know this advice sucks but if you have a sensitive sniffer you could be chasing a rabbit

I hear ya! But after working with Harley’s for 25+ years, and smelling fumes until I was blue riding behind thousands of bikes at Sturgis many times, I understand the basic concepts of the engine combustion process, and aerodynamics behind a windshield🤔

But I’m trying to source ideas that have actually worked for different people, then come up with a plan myself. No since in reinventing the wheel👍

The Sling is a toy, not a Cadillac, so you will never make it ride, or smell like one!!

    Thanks.

Yes, mine is from 1320. You will be amazed how much restriction is in that CAT when you remove it. Looking down into it, it's a honeycomb of holes, maybe 1/16" with the steel between each hole. I'd guess that would open up the flow by 1/3.

Yep! I’ve already installed the 1320 V2 header/exhaust, and you are correct about how packed up the cat is! However, that’s when my fuming issue started🤬 The 1320 system looks soooo good in there, I hate to remove it!!! Going to Try a few things to alleviate some of the fumes, before summer gets here!

I knew it was too pretty, and like a pretty woman trouble was coming with it😳

So your saying that you can change header, use cat delete pipe, and stock muffler and for the most part fumes will be eliminated? Or at least heavily reduced? I sure would hate to lose my pretty 1320 exhaust☹️ Have to wait, and see what warm weather brings!

Didn’t it rain last year, Or was it just cool out? I remember something was off?

Just to clarify, I didn’t attend the event as I hadn’t bought a sling yet. But I was doing a lot of reading at the time! I always went up that way with my Harley during July vacation, and it was hot, and humid with a few good storms thrown in! Love me some Tail, Tail of the Dragon I mean😳

That is where the adjustable Madstad windshield has it's advantages when it comes to ventilation. As far as a look-thru windshield, I have already posted what happens here when the fog/frost moves in during our winters. Just rain right now, but with the temps hovering around the freezing point it will be the better part of valor to just keep the Grasshopper tucked in snug and cozy in the garage...........

    Bill

I never liked looking thru the windshield of my bikes, and at my height rarely did. But I thought I would have a winter, and summer windshield since I already have the Ripper🤔

With a Madstad windshield but otherwise the same here, no fumes. We've recently added a part-time top so will be attentive to any new issues it may cause, but none so far.

    Bill

Which top did you go with? Meansling,I think it’s called?

Well if I can’t figure out a solution,I can always revert back to stock! The windshield, I’m 6’2 so always face in the wind with stock, and not a fan of cold. I have found the backdraft definitely chills from behind you as well.

The top,I want for Ga sun protection, but not a fan of the look, and wifey tells me to suck it up, as she likes the sun. I’m too old for it I guess😂 Maybe the removable one might work?

No one has mentioned this simple mod yet https://www.welterperformance.com/product/wind-deflector/ Other than they fall off, are there any reviews about fumes?

That is a simple, and interesting item! I can see where on the face of it pushing the exhaust air downward would breakup the stream, but I think it could even cause the air to roll over into the cockpit from the rear even more! I guess it’s above my pay grade, but I don’t really understand why someone in the aftermarket field has not done exstensive wind tunnel, smoke test on a sling🤔 Surely there is something to be learned from it, and some market for the parts that’s bound to come from it. JMO.

Ghost. You are correct sir! It took me a long time working on Harley’s to understand the true concept of you can’t have it all. When you gain something, you generally lose something HP, Torque etc...... When you modify one part, it starts a downhill slide of always chasing the next area To compensate for that change. I assume that’s why a lot of people on here keep going until they hit Turbo stage, which starts the cycle all over, and brings its own challenges. That being said, I said to wifey I was ONLY going for comfort Mods on the Sling. However, here we are😳 Now back to shopping for parts😂😂

I'm known as the 'modless' one in these parts. probably under $2,000.00 in mods...2 main ones being F4 5+ tinted Windshield and hugger rear fender...

And....... I already researched both of those😳 I started with the exhaust/header first to try and lower the heat on passenger, Heck both sides of the cabin. I just assumed Ike all the Harley's removing cat was done the day you buy it unless you do want your shoe to melt. Then on to the other mods. It was hot out the day I bought it, and drove it about 2 1/2 hours home, oh and it rained, so it was nice and humid. I started that night looking for cat delete! Well by the time I got that done, the cold air was here, so started down the cold air mitigation trail. At that time I really realized it truly is a motorcycle😂😂😂 But I still like it👍 And the beat goes on...
