I agree with him completely about Polaris. Their marketing dept. is composed of idiots, I wonder if any of them have even driven a slingshot. The comments about dealerships will depend on the dealer involved good or bad. His comments on accessories are spot on.

(walking up to the Soapbox to vent)

The Polaris business model is real inefficient and makes absolutely no sense. Whomever developed it really needs to go back to business school.

First: Branding and lack thereof. You go to dealers and see no banners, no merchandizing, and no part supplies. How do you get customers excited if you aren’t excited too? At a minimum, there should be banners, clothing, and parts/accessories to show potential new customers/returning customers what is possible. The dealerships should also have a basic set of parts so that they can do simple maintenances.

Second: Centralization. The dealers need to go to Polaris for their approval on EVERYTHING. The dealers should be able to do any basic warranty work without needing to get prior approval from Polaris. A gasket leaks on a three month old vehicle, the dealer should not need to go to Polaris for permission to repair it. It’s obvious that it’s not wear and tear at three months old and clearly under warranty! Think about the inefficiency of having to centrally address each/every little issue. This slows things down immensely and irritates (at a minimum) customers/dealers.

Knowledge base is also too centralized. Polaris does not adequately train its mechanics/service writers. A constant issue you see is where dealers do not know about their products and must contact Polaris for explanation/direction/guidance on how it works, how to maintain it, or repair it.

Third: Customer support/appreciation: Harley Davidson, Honda, et al understand that along with “branding”, that you need to support your customer base, and encourage them to like/want/need your brand. Harley Davidson has Harley Owners Group (HOG) at each dealership. Honda has a similar program, etc. These groups encourage people to be excited about their product, compare what others have done to their vehicles, use them (hear service/maintenance money being made), and promote their product to others (hear free advertising).

Mind you that: a) I have had my Slingshot for a short time now; b) have limited experience with the Slingshot community; c) LOVE my Slingshot; and d) in three months have over 4,000 miles on it - but I am at a total loss as to how Polaris seems to think that this business model works.

My experience in buying my Slingshot was painful. All seven dealerships, I dealt with, offered the exact same “discount”; no negotiations on service packages; extended warranties; and had to be forced to take a trade-in (but only well under bottom Kelly Blue Book/NADA values). I was literally told at four dealerships that I could “take it or leave it”. Two dealerships told me that they sold Slingshots only because they had to otherwise they have absolutely no interest in them.

After signing the last purchase document, I was told that the Slingshot I was buying was not available to take home due to “throwing a service code” that they needed to call Polaris for explanation/approval to fix. After spending all of this money, I went home with only paper in my hand and it would not be for 5 days before I was able to drive the Slingshot home. How exciting is that? How much faith does this give a new customer about his new purchase? How likely is this new customer to sing your dealership or product praises?

The day after I made my purchase (and still before I got my SS), I was sent a survey from Polaris about my purchase. I completed the survey (as I would normally do as a Yelp Elite reviewer) factually explaining my entire experience. The response to the survey? I had the dealership general manager call me - trying to explain more than apologize - and ask me to change my survey. He offered nothing to appease me - like offer me a t-shirt, reduction in cost for accessories/add-ons/service or even telling me my Slingshot was available.

I have purchased/owned 53 street bikes; 13 cars and numerous dirt/off road vehicles. Yes, I am that old. I have never had this kind of experience after purchasing a vehicle. Never have I walked away wondering what just happened or regretting my making a purchase. Again, I LOVE my Slingshot. The fact that I’ve put 4000 miles in three months attests to my “smiles per mile”. I just can’t understand this company model.

(slowly steps off soapbox and walks away)…..

NAPA stocks 5W50 Mobil One. As I said 2 months ago it was on sale for $5.99 a Qt. then. Look at Daves post for Purolator filters that fit. It is not uncommon for an engine to take more or less oil than called for. In my R it was exactly 5 quarts, lucky me. The threads on the filter are fine and it does have to turn more to take off and on.

Here is a new one that bugs me. The MP3 player starts out the same place every time I start up after a shut down. If I am listening to a bunch of songs and want to continue, it won't stay where it was when I shut down, it starts all over again. Is thiis something new and has anyone else had the same problem? It didn't do this on my 2015 model. Maybe the system doesn't like me using Ubuntu to load my songs on to the USB drive. Anyone else notice this or is it a unique problem for me?

Using my IPhone mine will always start out where it left off.

But are these stock machines, boosted, bigger wheels, etc.....All i know is im starting to see this failure in this spot and pics are being posted with no info, now i have the ZZ Performance Pinion brace on mines and for a brief moment had a piece of mind knowing that was one issue i wouldnt have to worry about........but now seeing this pic only gave me a false sense of security because now im like WTF........i consider myself an aggressively SAFE driver but now im like take it easy , you might be stranded 🤔

I agree with MADDMOE this failure is showing up lots more and we don't get enough info to try and find out what is going on. Was it boosted? what else had been done? I saw the brace, which was supposed to stop this and didn't.

This is a serious thing and a failure of that kind could get someone hurt or worse.

We need facts not stupid pictures.

Call Daniel at Mancuso Power Sports Gulf freeway in Houston. He has plenty of the base units and the best deals.

Just cancelled our reservation at the comfort Inn . Hated to do it but with the increases in covid 19 and our medical conditions it is probably the best choice. We were really looking forward to this as it would be our first time, maybe next year. We are still planning on Cruisin the Coast in October. We will be looking for all the pics.

I have seen them here in the past. I need to find out who makes a box trailer with a lift for 2 Slingshots. I really don't want a long trailer but need to haul 2 at a time one on top of the other. Any help would be great.

IMPORTANT UPDATE CONCERNING SSITS 11-16 AUG
SLINGSHOT ROADSTERS HAS BEEN WORKING VERY CLOSELY WITH THE TOWN OF MAGGIE VALLEY TO ENSURE A SUCCESSFUL EVENT IN AUGUST. AT THIS TIME, WE ARE BEING GRANTED A LICENSE FROM THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA PERMITTING US TO HOLD THE EVENT AS LONG AS WE MAKE THE FOLLOWING STATE MANDATED CHANGES TO OUR EVENT TO REMAIN WITHIN THE GUIDELINES OF THE PHASE 2 STATE RE-OPENING REQUIREMENTS, LISTED BELOW:
    • ALL VENDORS WILL BE THERE DOING INSTALLS.
    • MEET & GREETS WITH SOCIAL DISTANCING WILL BE PERMITTED TO TAKE PLACE.
    • DRIVE IN MOVIES FOR SLINGSHOTS WILL BE FEATURED.
    • CONTROLLED GROUP RIDES WILL BE ELIMINATED. WE WILL BE ALLOWED TO HAVE TWO AMBASSADORS ONSITE EACH MORNING BETWEEN 8 TO 8:30AM TO HAND OUT MAPS AND ASSIST PARTICIPANTS IN MAKING UP SMALLER GROUPS TO TAKE RIDES.
    • WE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO PROVIDE FOOD AND BEER VENDORS ONSITE IN THE FAIRGROUNDS.
    • WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FEATURE BANDS & MUSIC.
    • WE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO HOLD A PARADE OF SLINGSHOTS.
WITHOUT THESE CHANGES WE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO RUN THIS EVENT. ALL ELSE STAYS THE SAME. THE FUN AND THE CAMARADERIE. BRING ALL THOSE SLINGSHOTS INTO THE FAIRGROUNDS, SHOW THEM OFF, SEE VENDORS, AND TAKE RIDES!!!!!!! TO REGISTER GO TO………… WWW.SLINGSHOTROADSTERS.COM/EVENTS WHILST EVERYONE CONCERNED WITH RUNNING THIS EVENT BELIEVE IT WILL BE A SUCCESS, WE NEED ALL TO BE AWARE THAT, SHOULD THE GOVERNOR OF NORTH CAROLINA DECIDE TO WALK BACK PHASE 2 OPENING THEN THE CHOICE WOULD NOT BE OURS AND WE WOULD HAVE TO BE CANCELLED.

If their are NOT going to be food or beer venders there How are we supposed to get water or sodas for those of us who might need this. I would suggest as many venders sell water of sodas as possible. It would be easier than having to load a cooler in the sling.

Trying to find out if Maggie Valley is a go. We called the hotel today to check it out and see if they had an update on what's going on. The lady said so far it is still planned but the governer is supposed to make an announcement in a few weeks. They are in stage 2 now and have had an uptic in covid 19 cases. If they don't go to stage 3 this event is off she said.

Are the buttons at the bottom of the ride command screen supposed to be illuminated. I was out the other night and noticed they were not lit up. Is this normal or do I have a problem ? This was in my 2020 but I don't see a difference with the older units. Please let me know how yours works. Thanks

    Jamesgn

I am not talking about the flip switches, they are lit up. It is the push buttons at the base of the ride command that are part of the ride command screen. You need to be careful with your flip switches in your house, they might be prone to break also.

    Jamesgn

Had my 2020R out last night and really paid attention to the cab lighting. Noticed that the buttons at the bottom of the ride command do not light up so you can't see them to change anything. Is this the way it is or do I have a problem ? O yes I have the manual so no bitching there.

    Jamesgn

Teresa and I are booked at the Comfort Inn Tuesday through Sat. Really looking forward to the rides and meeting new slingers and seeing a few old farts like EJ and Boomer again.

    Jamesgn

This is NOT the week for SSITS....which will be in Aug. This is just a 'call' for those who want to ride to come out and join FunCycle for a ride in the Smokes'

Thanks EJ I didn't look at the dates just the destination. We are good

    Jamesgn

Does that mean to just pull the Ride Command one has to take apart the whole dash?? Just Curious.. I may get the Polaris 9.5 windshield... Can't imagine it is much more difficult than the 7.5 that cam with the Sling.

YES, on the 2020 if you want to pull the ride command unit out or need to install a center brace for any windshields that requires one and needs a plate on the underside of the dash YOU WILL HAVE TO REMOVE THE ENTIRE TOP OF THE DASH INCLUDING THE MIRRORS.

UPDATE-- Madstad doesn't have a 2020 yet to even look at. So we will both have to wait to get one installed.

I have a new F4+5 that I am going to put on until then.

The entire top dash does have to be removed to install the center brace with a bottom plate. I will start on that today and take pictures as I get it done. I will post it in the DIY section later.
