Thanks for the heads up.
Crap i have 4 of those
I just heard last week about the son of an acquaintance being crushed to death by an RV when his jack stands collapsed. You CANNOT BE TOO CAREFUL WHEN GOING UNDERNEATH A VEHICLE! Even a lightweight like the Sling.
Doc&Ruby I'll be passing this info on to the family. Who knows - these could have been responsible. Thanks for putting it out!
It looks very similar to my trusty Sears “Chinese” one
probably a good reason to buy American. Sears gets all their tools from China now. That’s why I stopped buying anything from sears several years ago. Perfect example of corporate greed taking control of the company to increase profits while killing a tried and true quality American company and its great reputation.
I, too, have 4 HF 3-ton jack-stands, 2 of which my Daughter left at a friend's house. I just checked to 2 still in my garage and they're part number 38846, so it looks like mine are not part of the recall. Hopefully, the other 2 will also be OK.
Speaking of recalls, today I received a second notice recall from Polaris about getting my battery fuse checked.

Me too! Called dealer and they will order the part for me.
Yeah, I know... should have done that sooner 🙄

I have done the recall on Sling II but still have not done the recall on Sling I. The Notice came in yesterday, again.
Got my jack stands replaced yesterday... sort of.
"Do you have your receipt?"
"Nope."
"I'll look that purchase up for you... Our computer only goes back 2 years, so I can only give you our lowest sale price..."
So I got credit for $21. I've never seen 3-ton jack stands that low, but okay...
"Do you want to exchange them? Our new improved jack stands are right over there..."
They had one pair left; the twice as expensive but half the weight aluminum kind. The light weight really IS nice, but I still feel kinda gyped.
I'd think a Safety Recall would mean hey should have replaced them free w/o worrying about a receipt or anything else since the recall was because of UNSAFE design. Use your new receipt and mail a copy to HF HQ and ask why you were charged for a recall.
Only jack stands I own is a set of Torin Big Red 2 Ton stands my daughter got me shortly after I got the Slingshot. Under $25 for the pair on Amazon and with the Slingshot being the only vehicle I would use them on 2 Ton seems more than adequate - - I dont know much about these things, but from what I do find these dont seem to be related to this recall, but with so much of this stuff just being rebranded and made it the same place who knows
their best pick is made in China. I don’t trust Chinese steel.

Actually, the Chinese are a world leader in quality steel production. The problem lies with the production specs that they are given by American companies that are always looking to save a buck.

Here's some additional info on the situation and a good explanation of what can go wrong - https://www.motortrend.com/new…stand-recall-safety-tips/.
what you are looking at is the cast steel failing, my guess is because it’s junk steel.....maybe not hard enough for what it’s being used for....not hardened enough from the annealing process making it soft ..... or too much making it brittle...
another thing that bothers me is how the sheet metal part of the stand is welded together...
this is what I usually see......the top drawing is a crappy weld with little penetration....this weld is very weak.
the lower drawing is how it should be welded....with weld penetrating all the way through the metal thickness....
Things like this are made on an assembly line and the welders barely know what they are doing.....plus there is a lack of quality control. Good welds take time to prep the metal by beveling the two pieces for the weld to penetrate....that takes way too much time so it doesn’t get done.
So shop carefully since your life depends on it....
