Do we really need sporting events

  • Do you like to 'ice' fish?

  • Bigdog, it sounds like you need to perform a self exorcism. Luckily. I can help you through this. Slowly, repeat after me:

Oh wa, ta na, si am.

Oh wa, ta na, si am.

Oh wa, ta na, si am.

Oh wa, ta na, si am.

After each line of the saying, increase the speed until it makes sense

    Nobody gets outta here ALIVE

  • This thread got nasty and we are all above that. Sports is entertainment and whatever they can make - more power to em. Same can be said about movie actors and the exorbitant amounts of money they make or musicians insane incomes. Just because we have had a never before crisis here it is not time to panic and change things that have made this country the best place in the world to live. I don’t care Michael Jordon became a billionaire by being able to put a ball thru a hoop - I LOVED watching him do it. This country was and I hope will continue to be a free market system - so let athletes, movie stars, rock stars make whatever the market will bear and let them to continue to entertain us!!

I might not be right but I can sure sound like it

  • it doesn’t change my point of view...

I’m ok with that but....it’s ok for people to complain about the big income divides between CEOs and workers...which in my mind is far more important than the gigantic incomes of owners and players....for playing a game......I could have been killed on my job and many of my fellow workers were killed. Cops get killed everyday doing their jobs....not playing a game....doctors and nurses now are dying doing their jobs...not paying a guitar or acting in a doctor show on tv.....Real blue collar workers are getting screwed.....and not even close to getting what they are actually worth...that makes it wrong.

like it or not we live in a country where people get paid what they are willing to work for - - as Bill said, its a free market and if I can find someone to do a job for me for X why would / should I hire someone who wants more than X - - and if you are not willing to work for X no one is going to force you too - free market, I am free to offer the wage I want to pay, and you are free to say yes or no.

Now just to be clear I do strongly believe that no employer should be allowed to hire non American citizens to do a job simply because thy will work for less - - the only time any Employer in this country should ever be allowed to hire a non citizen should be because there are no American citizens available who are qualified - - and proof that they actually tried to find an American citizen first should be required with heavy penalties if they do not. Also support heavy tariffs on any industry that tries to move production off shore to avoid paying American wages.

As a side note don't you find it interesting that virtually all of the horribly under paid teachers and first responders are government employees working in the public sector - - Perhaps if they let them into the free market the people would pay them what they are worth :/

You make it clear that you don't feel you were paid what you were worth - - if thats true then why did you take the job??

Bill is it OK if the residential paint contractors make enough money to put lots of GAS in the Slingshot?

  • Bill is it OK if the residential paint contractors make enough money to put lots of GAS in the Slingshot?

Well of course - ya gotta have gas money to give all the pretty girls a ride - it’s entertainment AND a public service :00008172:

I might not be right but I can sure sound like it

  • where they are working doesn’t matter when the Companies and CEOs are corporate greed oriented....their motto is less workers, doing more work, For less money. If you talk to nurses, patients lives are in jeopardy everyday from under staffing before the virus hit... They are overworked and under paid...most love their jobs but hate the workplace...and conditions..

at the time I got hired it was the highest paying job in the county....with pension, vacations, healthcare and a union. That was before NAFTA killed everything...After that it was take a wage freeze, take concessions give up this and that...I stayed for the pension with 30 years and out....I left with 32....it’s paying off big time ...with pension and social security I’m making the same as I did working.....I <3 my union. Even though they screwed us.

So I’ve been retired for 16 years already @51 and received over $400,000 in pension money so far.....I gave up part of my hourly wage (take home pay) to put into the pension fund....

For record ...those guys Working now are making $60-70-80,000 Without overtime...almost double what I made.. ...$90-100,000 with OT..

  • For capitalism that is just the nature of the beast - it is managements job to get as much for as little to increase profits. Workers elect to work for what they are willing to pay...or not!! Just exactly how do you propose to fix that dynamic...socialism?? As unfair to some as it seems, capitalism is the only economic structure to survive the test of time.

I might not be right but I can sure sound like it

  • The title of the thread was do we “need” sports?

The simple answer is of course NO.

But, we have wants, like Slingshots, bass boats, firearms and beer.

I will pay what I think is a fair price for the things I want. Some things are worth more to me than to other people, and they can’t understand why I would spend the money I do on my wants.

I am willing to spend more on my doctor than the local police officer. My doctor has more education and can do things for me that I can’t do for myself. On the other hand, I can protect myself better than the local police officer since I’m with myself all the time and there is never a trained law enforcement officer around when you need one (except for me, cause I am one and I’m always with me). So, I have no problem paying the local police less than a doctor.

Same correlation for paying more for a software engineer, pilot and an A/C repairman and less for my trash collector, lawn maintenance guy or pool boy. The latter may all be important, but not needed, at least not by me.

But I WANT football, so therefore I will pay for it.

  • A good analogy here would be why would a MARRIED guy go to a titty bar and pay $15 for a beer and $50 for a lap dance -,ya got the same thing at home - it is entertainment :00008172:

before NAFTA And the 401ks in the Early 70s....I don’t remember upper management people making a whole lot more than the worker bees...Then the companies started corporate takeovers just to raid the pension funds.....and companies started to claim bankruptcy To avoid paying out pensions.....they stole the money........remember the term corporate raiders? Slime balls ....using greed to become rich...while putting thousands of people out of work and with no pension. Is that the definition of capitalism?

The government came up with the plan to suck everyone into the 401k scheme. Stocks became the fuel to fund the 401Ks ....All this made the CEOS Wealthy From corporate greed...Screwing blue collar people out of their hard earned pensions became very profitable for them. Not only did the workers get screwed out of their pensions....they made them part of the scheme by making everyone a stock owner....So now they unwittingly became part of the corporate greed cycle....blue collar people now have to root for it so they can get some money to try to retire on...it’s a vicious circle with no escape. I call it a Ponzi scheme....

Workers wages stagnated....benefits dried up. Healthcare was stripped away...pensions were gone.

Capitalism is many times fueled by corruption and greed.......I’m not in favor of socialism in any way shape of form...But there is something fundamentally wrong with the way it is now. the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer....CEOs are constantly asking for less workers for less pay...and as a reward For cutting Someone’s job and someone’s pay they get a percentage of the savings as a bonus...let’s call it blood money....screwing people out of a decent living...to line their pockets....the definition of capitalism has changed....
