How much exactly does one have to remove to get to the upper bolt from the back...
Technically, you do not have to remove anything to get to the upper bolt for the rear shock in the back. There is a hole in the passenger side storage compartment behind the seat that allows you to get to the head of the bolt. That said, it can be tough to hold the shock up in place, align the bolt just right and get the threads to start. If you do it on a regular basis, you can do it, but otherwise, sometimes removing the rear plastic makes it actually easier and quicker than trying to fight the installation.

Need 2 people but you can do it without removing any plastic. Just takes patience.

Got the shock mounted. Glad that's done. I started screwing the plastic cover back on and couldn't figure out why there were gaps. I was getting frustrated. Then sitting here I found a before pic. Wow what shitty fitment from polaris.

actually this will be tomorrows mod, and not really a mod, just a little preventive maintenance. Got 4 1/2 years on the old one and since I had the time and a bit of extra $$ figured I would replace it now instead of waiting until it conked out on me. I do carry a jump starter, but I would still rather do it on my terms
