Opinion/Advice on Harbor Freight Trailers

  • Just curious what everyone's opinion is on those small Harbor Freight trailers and wondered if anyone has ever built a small luggage trailer and pulled it behind their Slingshot when traveling? I'd love to hear from someone with experience with this before I decide. I searched for an existing thread and was surprised to not find one. Thanks in advance.

They have even pulled boats on trailers with the Slingshot

I bought one of HF's 4ft x 8ft folding trailers for use as my first motorcycle/general purpose trailer and used it for 4 years before replacing it with a trailer from Tractor Supply. When I first purchased the HF trailer, I replaced the bearing cover with a spring-loaded cap that allows extra grease to be injected into the bearing, with the spring hopefully maintaining pressure to keep grease in the bearings. https://www.harborfreight.com/…tectors-1-pair-97166.html. Don't know if they really made a difference, but the spring-loaded caps provided some peace-of-mind. I replaced the HF trailer because I wanted a slightly larger trailer and I had to replace one of the folding frame pieces on the HF trailer that had rusted through. When I went to order replacements for both sides, I was only able to get the one I needed, but the one I wanted as a spare for the other side wasn't available. I don't remember if it was just out of stock or no longer available. I never did anything to the HF trailer frame to provide additional rust protection, so it might be a good idea to give it some additional rust protection before bolting everything together.

Overall, I was satisfied with the HF trailer. I'd recommend waiting until you can find a 30% or 20% off any item coupon and the trailer isn't on sale.

Thanks, there's a Tractor Supply only a few miles from me that I hadn't thought of. I'll certainly give them a look.

  • Several folks pull trailers and mini-campers.

You are going to need a hitch for the Slingshot...

    And trailer wiring plug up...

    Check Slingmods.

    Other options include luggage racks.

    Hitches with aftermarket racks installed.

Build it yourself car top carriers.. check our DIY section.

Slingshot Flyer! Well, of course it's red... :REDSS:

  • The small HF trailer (https://www.harborfreight.com/…tility-trailer-62645.html) is a good size for mounting a large luggage carrier normally used on a car/SUV roof.

I didn't see any small trailers on TS that I thought would work behind the Slingshot, but I did find several small trailer on Northern Tool.

    Steel frame - https://www.northerntool.com/s…oduct_200612543_200612543.

    Aluminum frame - https://www.northerntool.com/s…oduct_200660342_200660342.

Steel frame with luggage carrier - https://www.northerntool.com/s…oduct_200692633_200692633.

Really like the one from northerntool that has the container on it already. It looks perfect. Thanks!

  • Harbor Freight trailers: underbuilt, poorly welded and finished, non-existent warranty. I wouldn't buy one to haul my trash can to the curb. I t might do what you want but why? It's going to last a year or two and break doing what it's made to do.

    Just my opinion.

  • I’ve pulled a few trailers with my GoldWing and you get what you pay for. The good ones aren’t cheap when new but used is the way to go. I would look at escapade or bush tech trailers with air ride. Just follow a guy pulling the harbor freight or any leaf spring trailer and watch them bounce around on rr tracks and pot holes. You can pull a good one through the twisties without fear.

  • Thanks everyone. I've pretty much crossed Harbor Freight off my list and like Wingshot said, the good ones ain't cheap. I believe also that a used good one is the way to go and told my wife last night that if it's meant to be, the right one will find me... 😊

  • I've been known to spend several months looking for the right deal on something I'm looking for including my trailers. If you're constantly looking, you'll know when a deal comes along.

Pro Tip: Don't be afraid to offer half of what someone is asking if you perceive motivation to sell or it's been on the market for awhile. Some will say yes.

  • Roadhawg another option could be a cargo rack like mytoy has which mounts on a hitch receiver behind the Sling. If that meets your cargo needs it's a way to haul without another set of wheels on the ground and, in my state, another registration tag. Guys have also built racks on their tops that are pretty roomy.

One of the issues I have with small trailers is the small wheels and tires. Personally, I wouldn't use anything less than a 14" wheel at highway speeds. Those small tire generate too much heat and bearings tend to fail. Nothing is worse than a breakdown when you're on the road recreating. It can ruin an entire trip!
