Looking for Suggestions on Restoration

  • A buddy of mine gave me a ship's binnacle with a compass and an engine order telegraph. The dial on the telegraph is some kind of thin plastic or acrylic which appears to be painted or screened in red and black. the red has faded and my wife would like to get it restored, repainted or replaced. Do any of you have any suggestions who, or what type of business might be able to do this kind of work?

  • You might consider taking a photo and seeing if someone can print a vinyl decal to apply to it.

Thank you sir! This is along the lines of what I was thinking. I know there are people here that know more about decals than moi. There are 2 sides, 12 inches in diameter and they both need redone. Do any of you folks with the fancy printers have any input on this?

  • You will need to recreate all the artwork before you can print.

No so much the printer but the person who needs to create the file to be printed. I have a graphic artist I work with who can create the file but he is in NY. If you can not find anyone reach out to me and I can put you together wit him.

  • A high resolution scan of it and I could make you something. Or bring it to Slingfest with you.

    I can definitely bring them. I don't have a scanner that will scan a 12" diameter circle. I guess I need something larger that 8 1/2" x 11".

Thanks MACAWS . New York is closer than the U.K. where my wife found a guy doing these. I may have an angle with Slingshot Garage and I happen to be heading his way next week. Now to work on getting a scan.

I just told my wife about these posts and she says she knows a guy who will know what to do. She has been a graphic designer in previous lives and has a few contacts. Just needed to jog her memory.

  • Sorry, what you really need is a Silkscreener (think the guys that make t-shirts). I buy printed stuff like this every day as part of my day job. Artwork would be good, but a decent guy can probably scan and make his one. A single color shouldn't be too expensive.

  • I don't have a color printer.

  • We have a vinyl decal cutter at the University, but I haven't used it.

I would check with printing shops in your area. Two decals that size shouldn't be THAT expensive to print.

The smarter you get, the funnier I am.
