It’s an Accessory - not a Mod...

  • Well it finally happened to me. You know that thing that sometimes happens to all men once they get a little older and need a little help - you know....in "that" area. Well, I finally had to admit that it was time for me to …..=O

Make a gas cap remover! :00008862: I almost lost all my “cool” points ( and I don’t have many left :00008356:) on this last trip as it was darn near impossible to get the cap free to gas up. So this little gem is now in the barrel bag from now on. 1/8” x 2” aluminum plate painted SS metallic gray. Got some door trim on each side so as to not muck up the cap too.

We’ll get there when we get there and not a minute before. 😎

  • The rubber seal inside my cap came loose and fell out. I had to glue it back in.

rubber seal in my cap rotted and came out in pieces - - I am sure the California smog police wouldn't be happy, but I have never bothered replacing it

  • As long as there isn’t any gas slopping out....

I have never had it slosh out, but I suspect it does let it vent without going through the charcoal vent system that is on CA models

That is the reason you are supposed to stop adding gasoline when the handle stops letting fuel into the gas tank. On all vehicles, especially the ones that do vacuum tests for escaping gas fumes. It will suck gasoline into the filter and it might throw a check engine light code.

  • Another anecdote from SlingLow:

I once took my wife's '73 Mustang Grande (351 Cleveland) in for a smog test in Washington and they had just instituted the gas cap seal test. Of course it failed. The tech told me I had to buy a new one and they had them for sale. I explained that this was an original classic and I wasn't about to give up the stock cap with the pony on it. He called the floor manager who told me the same thing. I asked for the business manager and was escorted into the waiting area that was full of customers. The business manager told me the same thing for the 3rd time so I pulled out my soap box (I'm 5'5") and told him in my outdoor voice that I'd give him the 20 bucks for the gas cap, pass the test, and as soon as I had my certificate and before I moved my car, I was going to walk over to their trash can, throw that piece of s#!t in it and replace my Mustang cap on the vehicle and there's NOTHING you can do about it because your NOT THE EFFING GAS CAP POLICE! He instructed the floor manager to pass me and I kept my 20 bucks.

Remember folks - this isn't a rehearsal, this is The Show!8)

You do know it can fail just because it’s not on tight enough....it pulls a vacuum test and if it’s not tight it doesn’t create a vacuum.
