trakhamr self-install kit

  • Is it fabricated or is it a stock drive shaft? I didn’t think to ask Troy.

We started the install today on mine, ran into a hitch with the newer frame mount for the angle drive and am working with Troy for modifications. I will say that his customer service is top notch, making everything right and answers his phone fast. Five star for the service and the quality of the build is excellent.

I’ll have pics up later when I get to the hotel, and we captured a lot of video today, will have to be edited, but I’ll throw up some teaser pics later.

  • Wishing I had rode up to DDM myself

I would have put your ass to work :) Slopoke came up to watch the install and wound up helping a lot, thanks brother!

That angle drive was a pain to pull, having never done it before, and my Welter rear exhaust got in the way, it had to be pulled out, all the way to the front (need to pull the stock driveshaft away from the rear of the transmission. And if you have a Welter rear, you will need to get it re-routed with the Trakhamr.

One other minor issue that I spent too much time working on, Troy doesn't use the 12mm/1.25 studs in the trakhamr. He DOES ship you knew, very nice, lug nuts for both rear and back, the front's being our standard 12mm/1.25, not sure what the rears are.

The problem with that is my wheels, my Racestar wheels are designed for drag tires, 17x10.5, and they use a shank lugnut:

I had brought extra for my 4th wheel, but we had to take the wheel adapter off of the rear end (he has an adapter to go from chevy 5 hole to our ford 5 hole), so we pressed those out and put in new studs. Yeah, I said stud, plural :)

Me and Slopoke were too busy shooting the shit and it took us a couple of trips to the parts store to get the right studs, ok, 3 trips, that's my normal routine for projects...

Once we finally got the wheels mounted on the new rear-end and the angle drive out, it was time to mount up.

A bit of feedback for Troy, his installation video doesn't cover this, but you need to pull the back plastic panel loose, the one that the rear shock on the slingshot goes through, that way you can line things up. I took video of the install, hopefully some of it can be edited and used to help improve on the instructions.

The snag we ran into was that the 2017 and higher changed the frame on the drivers side where the angle drive mounts, and his torsion box on the front of the trakhamr frame doesn't fit into my 2019. Dave is going to work his magic with a little bit of welding to make it fit. I traded a lot of pics and calls with Troy (again, 10/10 service) working with him on it.

Do these tires make my ass look big?

It's not bolted up here, we were doing a test fit after cutting away one side of the torsion box, we stopped here tonight, will continue on tomorrow.

Big thanks to Dave@DDMWorks for all of the help, guidance and patience.

  • I would have not minded the work but for sure my back would have been complaining after a few hours

  • All I can say is that I will never look at wheel stud the same ever again!

It was a blast helping out yesterday and wish I would have stayed longer, but 12 hours is my cutoff time.

On a side note, Dave and I decided that we really need to throw some 38 inch Mud Terrains on the back and take it offroading!

I will have the time lapse and some pics up later today. Again, what a blast to work on.

  • airoutlaw The problem we ran into was the angle drive mount on the older vs newer frames. The older models have a forged frame, this is the older frame :

    and this is mine:

The newer has a pipe setup and is wider than the older ones and the mounting system in the trakhamr didn't account for this, but Troy is resolving it. To get this resolved quickly, Dave agreed to do some welding to adapt it, moving the mounting plate about 3/16" over. If you see the silver line, that's where the mounting plate was hitting my frame.

  • Yes sir!

IIRC, that frame change happened in the 2017 models.

Slingshot Flyer! Well, of course it's red... :REDSS:

  • Well, unfortunately my Gopro's battery died and I only got the removal of the angle drive and rear section along with some exhaust Porn beginning at 1:39 and climaxing at 1:48 ^^:P

Maybe it wasn’t as widely discussed as you think.

  • wokka those tires look hot , what size are they , haven't decided on mine yet ?

BKL is correct, 315/35r17 all the way around, front and back. Details can be found at Wheels & Tires Congrats on the new business deal! That's awesome. You should do a self-install on both a 2015 - 2016.5 and a 2017 or higher as your inauguation, so you can properly support them. I'll help with tech support for a credit on your store :)

But, my hourly rates are not cheap...

I didn't know about it, but I've only been under a newer one, so I can't speak to that, but Troy is making things right, I have no complaints at all. I knew I was getting one of the very first self install kits, there is a bit of risk in that. I was hoping for a smooth install, but I know my luck, Murphy follows me around, sits on my shoulder and poke his head into everything I do. Home project, hobby, work, you name it, if something can go wrong, it will with me.

I think Dave is starting to understand that I wasn't just BS'ing. He jokingly said he was going to send me every new product to test (I hope he does!)

  • There is one portion of the self-install that most people cannot do themselves, and that's an alignment. Troy's instructions tell you to take the sling and get the rear-end aligned right away. Also, Troy told me that the passenger side wheels are a bit wider of the center of the sling vs the driver's side, but I didn't think to ask him how much the difference is.

We have to do exhaust and alignment on mine and then it will be ready to road test.

We did do a quick test to make sure things worked :)
