Replacement speaker options for 2017 factory pods?

  • Anyone know of replacement speaker options that will fit in the factory pods without spacers? Being fairly tall, I really don't want to have a speaker grill digging into my leg.

I have been looking at a number of "shallow mount" 6.5" speakers but, unsure what will actually fit.

    Radio is an aftermarket JVC.

Added SSV Works behind seat pods with JVC speakers.

Sound is very good but, now the factory speakers are just lost.

Likely an impedance mis-match. The new rears are 4 ohm.

I had to adjust internal crossover to -8db on the rears to balance things out.

    All suggestions appreciated.

  • I used a Cerwin Vega component set (midbass driver only). Required a 1/4" spacer but otherwise dropped in nicely. Had Morels in but they required a 1" spacer which I do NOT recommend given your goal re: legroom. Best part of the CVs is that they are 94 db/1W, which is very sensitive and helps put out a lot of sound without taxing your stock amp too much.

    Also, what model Vega's?

The leg room is a pretty big issue as my left leg rests up against the factory speaker grill.

I am worried that if I add a spacer and an aftermarket grill, it will make for uncomfortable rides.

Component speakers appear to give a bit more room as the tweeter isn't sticking out in front of the speaker.

  • For those that want to know the depth of the factory speaker: 2 1/8 inch.

In an effort to see how much wiggle room there is, I pulled the speaker and re-mounted from the back side. If you look at the speaker cage, it is 3/16 thick. Add another 1/16 for the plastic pod, that pushed it back 1/4 inch.

With this configuration, it DID hit the back of the enclosure. Just barely but, enough that the enclosure would not go back together.

After looking more closely at the way the factory grill is attached, it appears that there will be enough room for a shallow coaxial with a tweeter and still keep the factory grille. I can just leave the factory tweeters to fill the hole.

  • I bought a set of Alpine SXE-1750S shallow component speakers. They were low cost on amazon.

Several different pod options to mount tweeters - probably raise them wherever they look and sound good.

If it sounds like crap, they were under $50. I can always put them in the golf cart at camp.

    I bought these:

    1) http://www.amazon.com/Cerwin-V…erwin+vega+5.25+component

-Besides the slimline mid-bass driver, the key attraction was the 94db@1W sensitivity. More volume as the stock head-end unit/amp for the same power or the same volume for less power.

    2) I didn't use the crossover or tweeter; instead, the midrange and treble are handled by these:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mb-Qua…02014?hash=item591207fa1e

-Key attractions were fit (not exactly drop in but a few judicious cuts with a SkilSaw solved that) and the 1" aluminum dome tweeter which is very clear and sparkling.

To match, or at least go with, stock, I ordered these decorative grills:

    3) http://www.ebay.com/itm/2PCS-4…03074?hash=item4d55227402

-They don't snap on the speakers but 15 minutes later, after drilling 4 pilot holes and installing with solid screws, your 3.5" coax's are protected.

Finally, to guild the lily and add some thump without taxing the stock amp, I had installed two of these self-powered slimline subs, one under each seat:
