Go Pro Information

  • I would like for some people to chime in and share a little info on their camera use. I don't know the first thing about a GoPro. Never even touched one. Black Friday is here and needless to say I am unprepared. The one thing I do know is my girlfriend has Vertigo really bad and would never be able to watch a video where it was bouncing around. I seen the new GoPro 7 black. Seemed like allot of money. The hero 7 white is $179. That didn't seem bad. I do realize you get what you pay for. That is why I would like to hear from some of you folks that know much more than I do about this. I did read some other posts on the subject but I wanted to kinda get an updated perspective. Once again thank you all in advance very much for responding to my post. I really hope to one day give back as much to this forum as it has given me.

  • Tim, I don't know anything about cameras...I'm using a Sony that takes a 3.5 floppy dics to save pictures. The question-- $$$??? how much the in camera and for what purpose. Lot of the folks have set up the GoPro and shoot lots of film to upload and share here. I shoot some stills and share and I have learned how to do some slide shows and share them.

My TWO-CENTS.gifgo a little less $$$ until you figure out how 'pro' you want to go.

    Have a great Thanksgiving.

I own a Go Pro Hero 4 Black which I purchased a few years back and love it. If I was ready to update for a newer one, I would go for the Go Pro 7 Black (I may do that next year and have two Go Pros).

There are numerous accessories available for all GoPro on Ebay and Amazon. You can purchase original Go Pro accessories or generic brands.

Excellent stabilization on the GoPro 7 Black.

You may want to go to YouTube and watch a few videos on the GoPro 7s and see what they got to offer. Also, if you buy a Go Pro, I would recommend you purchase it from an authorized dealer... 8)

  • If you’re certain a GoPro is what you want… any version past 5 has great video stabilization and picture quality in my experience. That said, I don’t use the GoPro for any of my videos where I plan on keeping the camera angle fixed. And what I mean by that, is if you plan on taking forward facing video from the cabin (i.e. looking over the hood) and you want to mount it in that direction solely, I would use a Garmin VIRB Ultra 30. IMHO it has the best image stabilization and you’ll have more flexibility to control what metrics you show on a video.

Example of the Ultra 30 in action:

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you...

  • ericastar76 turned me onto the Garmin VIRB Ultra 30. I absolutely love it. The editing software by garmin is awesome and it records so much additional data that’s fun to use like speed, track laps, altitude, g-force, etc. I actually took mine scuba diving a couple weeks ago in Dominican Republic and took it down to 100’ for about 30min and it worked flawlessly. I was in the same boat as you right before I bought the Garmin unit. I actually picked up a used one off eBay for $230 and it came with a 128g micro SD card. I have a hero 5 black also and it’s a great camera but I do like the Garmin better.

    Hi Kyle,

how do you mount your Garmin? I'm thinking of purchasing one also.

  • Hi Kyle,

how do you mount your Garmin? I'm thinking of purchasing one also.

If I am mounting it on the dash I use one of their adjustable arm mounts https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/pn/010-12256-18 and I safety wire it to the windshield support. If I am mounting it between the fin and roll bar on the passenger side I use the suction cup mount https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/pn/010-12256-09 and safety wire it to the roll bar. Or I can mount it right to the roll bar with their large bar mount https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/pn/010-12256-02 that I modified a bit. I haven't figured out a good way to mount it to my helmet yet without sticking a mount directly onto my helmet which I refuse to do. I also use their remote for ease of use while in the SS as my helmet along with the wind and ambient noise is usually too loud for the voice activated commands to work well. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/146077 The wrist mount is pretty great for scuba diving. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/pn/010-12256-08 I use a Samsung EVO Select 128g SD card and love it. You can record full trips and not have to worry about running out of room on your card. It is the largest card that will work in the camera based off Garmin's site. You can get it on amazon here https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod…age_o02_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It had come with a Kingston 128g card and it was pretty slow. Batteries can go fast depending on the settings you are recording at. I do not use the Garmin replacemet batteries. I have the original one that comes with it and I got replacements off amazon and they last just as long as the Garmin battery and there are no fitment issues. https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod…age_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I also used this screen protector on it https://www.amazon.com/gp/prod…age_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which does not interfere with the touch screen in or out of the waterproof case.
