  • The Third Brake Light is located down the top of the rear Fin. It only comes on during braking. I was told by a rider behind me that my Third Brake Light was not coming on. My Slingshot was only about 3 months old and is under warranty, so why worry. Well time is my worry. If I drive 50 miles to the dealer and they find the problem is something has to be ordered, I am in a pickle for a return trip. This video was created to help isolate this problem to help save time and get you back on the road with the Third Brake Light working while the real trouble part is ordered. I have heard other reports of this problem, and it can go unnoticed, who goes back and look at their own tail lights with the brakes applied. Well you should do it, get someone to apply the brakes and check your tail lights fully for all working. Your safety is at stake and you may not have someone to tell you they are out. Some folks go the extra step to install an after market Third Brake Light Modulator to flash during braking. This will help with that process also.

    Now once the you follow this test and find your Third Light does not illuminate, you will know how to isolate the problem and notify the dealer of what part you suspect to be bad. In my case it was the FM Radio Antenna Module that was bad and I was able to drive safely until the part was available. I told the dealer what I did to isolate the problem and they were good with it and ordered the FM Antenna Module ahead of time.

  • New Owners, some of you may have family members that would love to drive your new Slingshot, but do not know how to drive a stick shift. Some will find it is hard for family to teach someone a driving technique. I have created a series of Driving video instructions to help with learning.   • Here is a maintenance item on your slingshot that may get overlooked. Drive Shaft Universal Joint. Your Slingshot has a standard Gm Drive Train of Engine, Transmission, and Drive Shaft. The Drive Shaft connects to output of the transmission and the other end connects to the L Drive that delivers power to the rear wheel through a belt drive system. At the drive shaft end that connects to the L Drive there is a Universal Joint. This is to allow the rear wheel to move up and down with the roadway as we drive. All of the power of the engine is applied to the U Joint as we drive though the ranges of speed and different roadways. Any wear on this joint can lead to vibration at certain speeds, performance loss, and failure.

    Now, don't worry. It may take 40,000 plus miles to reach these points due to neglect of maintenance of the U Joint.

    Why not do periodic maintenance of a few squirts of grease every other oil change and have it to last the life of the Slingshot. Some Model Slingshots do not have a Grease Zerk, so this is a sealed U Joint and does not need maintenance.

    I am only the messenger, I do not know why all are not sealed.

    To help the owners perform the maintenance on their U Joints, I have created a video to help guide you. One change I would make to the video is to use a tall cooler cup to pop the cup holders out and not use a screw drive. A rocking motion back and forth will make it pop loose.

  • New Owners at some time or another will look at the rear view Camera when backing up and say" I sure would like to be able to drive with the Camera and see what is directly behind for changing lanes and such". A lot of folks think, just install a switch and connect to the reverse switch on the right side of the Transmission and operate turning the camera on. Well, I am one that thought of that and took the next step to install such a switch. I was so happy to see the camera turn on and display the view when in a drive gear. I wanted to try it out, drove out of the garage to the street and found I could only drive 10 MPH with the engine studdering as you tried to go faster. This is the same condition you experience when you try to back up too fast. This is a normal function that Polaris installed to key you safe as you back up, a speed limiter.

    I was so disappointed. I wanted to find a way to disable the speed limiter and be able to drive with the Rear View cam on, I found out that when I pushed in the clutch, it turned off the studder Limiter function and still have the camera on. I installed a relay that turned on from the switch and the contacts would put a ground on the Clutch Lead, indicating the clutch was depressed. Took a test drive and all worked great. Except for one thing, after about 10 sec of driving at highway speed, the Check Engine Light comes on. That is because the ECM is seeing that there is a problem of a ground on the clutch lead and lets you know with a Check Engine Code. The problems don't end there. I just said, well, I know what the check light is, I will just ignore it and drive with the rear view cam on. Worked great for a while, then after turning the switch on and off a number of times, the ECM saw that there was a problem with me driving in reverse and the clutch depressed, so it cuts the power to the engine and you coast to a stop with the engine in idle. I had to turn the engine off and restart it to get the engine to run correctly. This would be dangerous if you are in heavy traffic as you will be without power.

    I am sharing my findings with you to save you time of trying this mod. Be careful and hope you can find a safe way to make this mod work. I would recommend buying a ready made Backup Camera and hookup to meet your needs.

  • Members and new owners, here is something to be prepared for, Locating and Checking Fuses. I have a video that will guide you in this process. First as always, check your year and model Slingshot Owners Manual for the information. Some years have different fuses, so look at my video as a guide, this video is on my 2015 Slinghsot SL When you are installing accessories, you may ground a power lead. Grounding means, a hot positive lead touches the negative frame or other ground wire. Another term is a Short. You may not know you did it and then something does not work. Remember, when you see something does not work, review any previous work done, and if it involve power connections, then you may want to look at the fuses. Now, as the video will show, you do not have to remove the fuse, you can check it in the location. Relays can be checked by feel, you should feel a click as it operates. May take two folks to check. Always replace fuses with same amp rating. In my video, I show using a Volt Ohm meter to check the fuses. You can use a simple test light probe. To check the fuses you would hook the clip to a good ground, and then use the probe to touch the metal spot on each fuse as I show with the volt meter. The Power ports are the most common problems for lose of power, it is call the accessories Fuse on the Fuse Block.

  • New Owners, you should get a Owners Manual with your Slingshot, even the Used Slingshot should come with one. Now, it is geared for all the important information a owner should know about the operation and maintenance of your Slingshot. If you want a more detailed view of the full adjustments, removing body panels, wiring diagrams, diagnostic codes and most things you will need to do work yourself. You will also get explanations of system operations, this will be a great aid in trouble shooting problems. To me it was even worth the full price of $169 I paid. I am finding you can search on line and find better options to get your Shop Manual.

    A lot of folks will soon if not already, need a brake Job. Yes the brake pads will need attention at around 40, 50,000 miles. Now this all depends on your driving pattern, hard breaking, mountain driving and riding the brake will require brake pad sooner. The Shop Manual procedure for Brake Maintenance is shown in detail steps, it is not hard and easy to understand. If you do have a problem understanding a step, you post your question on a thread and you will have 20 knowledgeable members come to your aid.

    You should read all steps before you begin a maintenance procedure outlined in the shop manual. The manual will cover a number of year models, so look for the info for your model. Different years may have different steps. I suggest you read the shop manual like a novel, it has some cool information that you will find out that will help when future needs arrive. If you like your Slingshot, you will enjoy reading it.

  • Brakes and brake Pads need to be talked about for the Slingshot. Most Slingshots do not get a lot of Mileage to worry about replacing the Brake Pads. Brake Pads can last a long time if you observe proper driving techniques. First thing to remember is you have a brake in the transmission. It comes into play when you downshift to a lower gear. The engine compression is actually creating the braking and the gear changes controls how hard you brake. The way this works is if you see you need to stop ahead, first reduce your speed by taking your foot off the accelerator, then at a point the RPM is in the next lower gear range, shift down one gear. Release your clutch slowly at first to let rpm pick up then all the way out. You will hear the engine pick up rpm and feel the Sling start to slow up faster. As you get closer to you final stop, gear down again with in the next lower gear range. You should not shift down more than one gear at a time. Example, going from 5th to 2nd or 3rd could cause the rear wheels to slow down so much that you will start skidding. You can safely down shift one gear and not have this to happen.

    You should drive to only use the brake under conditions that you can not use this downshifting method. This will keep your brakes from needing service of brake pads for a much longer period of time. It is also a much more fun way to drive.

    Now this really comes into importance when driving in the Mountains. I have followed folks down the mountains with the brake lights on the whole way down and burnt brake smell about to kill me. Cars and 4 wheel vehicles with auto trannys is not a discussion here, we are talking manual transmissions. Automatic Trannys can downshift, but most drivers don't know how.

    Now get out there and see how often you can drive without using the brakes. Now, be safe, I don't mean to not use the brake, but don't use it when the downshift will work safely. You will find this will give you a lot more fun of driving by working the gears instead of your foot on the brake. You will also get a better sounds from the engine as the engine provides the braking. Your brake job requirements will be extended down the road also.

  • Folks, it finally happened to me! My Slingshot would not start. Turned key on hit the button and nothing. Looked at my Battery Voltage Monitor mounted near Steering Column and saw I only had 8.8 volts. Far below the min start voltage of about 11 volts. Well, I have the Under The Hood Jump Port, so starting will be no problem. Watch the video and see how it is done. I now believe this is a feature that should be standard on future Slingshots. This is due to the Battery Location and hard to get to without a 40mm Torx Bit and driver. There are a couple of different mounting locations that can be used. Research and see what works for you, but get one. My Jump Port is mounted to the Alternator connection. In the video I suggest letting the jumper cable stay on the Jump Port and charge the battery a little bit, 10 min if your start vehicle can wait. You should have a volt meter or a Battery Voltage Monitor to check the level of your battery. When the battery reads 11.7 to 11.9 volts, you should be good to attempt a start. If there is not enough voltage, you will just hear the starter Solenoid Clattering sound. If this happens, Have the starting vehicle, start their engine and let idle. This should place a 13.6 Volt of charging to get the Slingshot battery up to level quicker. It would be good to have a Volt Meter or a Voltage Monitor of some kind handy with the Slingshot. Good Luck on not having a dead battery condition.

  • I know some of the new owners have had their Slingshots for a while and are really enjoying all the aspects of attention, driving, cruising with other Slingshots in group rides. It may have crossed your mind to capture some of your ride adventures in video. Some may find this a challenge. Where can you mount a camera and what type and what mounting system, well it goes to the point, without direction, you just don't do it. I am here to help you with one camera and one system to mount a Aukey Dash Cam. If any of you have mounted a Dash cam in you car, you know they all come with a suction cup mount for the windshield. It does not work well with the Slingshot. The Dash Cams are not expensive, under $75 and capture a great HD video or photos. Now My video will show all the steps to construct a base for the Dash Cam and the GoPro Mounting system will be custom modified to mount your Dash Cam to your Slingshot. You can also use a Magic Arm or Ram Mount to give more mounting locations on your Slingshot. The main thing is to have a Dash Cam that you can use for capturing your Ride Video. A GoPro is a great Cam also, but cost will make it out of reach for most. Also record time is only about 1 hour.

    The Aukey Dash Cam I propose with a 64 Gig Mem Card can capture 5 full hours of ride video in 10 min segments. This is important to be small amount of time for editing. Actually 5 min is a better capture segmented time. The video does not have breaks, but it is many files instead of on big 5 hour file. Now I do have a video on how to edit video after the ride, you may want to find it on my youtube channel if you don't know how to edit video. It is better than raw video.

    Well, let's get to watching and see if this will work for you. You can modify the information to adapt the Camera you have.

  • For all the new Owners, this is an area that will be of interest as you look into all the things you can add to your new Slingshot to make it personal. Lighting! It is one of the first things that you will look at to add. At some point you may want to add LED's to the Turn Signal system. I want to give a heads up, by giving you information about how the Turn Signal System works. It is important to know as some additions to the turn signal circuit can cause your signals to fail altogether or intermittently fail to flash. Another problem can be that they flash with the ignition switch in the on position but engine not running. When the engine is running they may fail to flash.

    Read all of this Thread Post before attempting to install Mods to the Turn Signal Leads. This subject has been discussed on this forum and many other forums. No solutions have been discussed. I am giving solutions and it works and is simple to overcome the issues to have the mods to work. Read on, I am giving our new owners a heads up on heading off problems. The Turn Signal Flasher Module is a computer that monitors the lights for proper current flow, mess with the system and you can have problems unless you listen to Sam Owens, he has been where you are trying to get!!!!

    Let me explain how the Flasher Module works, it is the key part to the Turn Signal System. The Front and rear LED Turn Signal LEDs are another part and the Turn Signal Lever is the third part.

    The Flasher Module is powered up when the Ignition key is turned to the on position. It is activated when the TS Lever is operated to left or right turn position. A Flashing signal is sent to the front and rear TS LEDs. The module has a Limit range of current that allows the LEDs to flash. If the current is out of this range it will not flash. The low range exceeded would be LED burned out or bad connection. The High range limit exceeded would be adding extra LEDs to the circuit or a ground on signal lead. The current draw of the LEDs you add could put the system into fault and cause all kinds of Flasher problems. The quickest way to test for this is to disconnect any Aux lighting added to the Turn Signal Leads. Take a test drive and see if all is working.

    I am posting a wiring diagram of my Aux Turn Signal Indicator LED strips I installed on Snazzy. I had a problem with the Flasher failing to flash the lights. at all. My LED Strips were drawing too much current. I added a 2 watt 100 ohm resistor in series as shown in the wiring diagram. Now indicator Strips are flashing with my turn signals. The resistor allow the Current Limits to be met. You could use a variable resistor (Poteneometer) to determine what resistance your LEDs will be needed for you project.

    Also posting the Flasher Module with pin layout along with a video to show you where the Flasher Module is located and how to gain access to it. You could wire your connection points to the module plug instead of going to the turn signal light plug. This would be for where you are installing your LEDS maybe like I did on the Rear View Mirror Arm. My video will help understand this.

    It seems a lot of folks have had problems in this area, I want to help you understand and avoid a problem or help solve it if you have a problem.

  • Additional information about adding Aux LED lighting to the Slingshot Turn Signal system has found while discussing the subject. One of our members had installed sequence chasing LEDs on the lower part of front spoiler and connected to the Turn Signal System. All worked fine for left and right blinking operation. Then a problem was found that the emergency flashers did not flash normally with the key in the off position. When the Emergency Flashers were activated, they flashed one time and quite. It would flash properly with the key in the on position.

    He found our discussion thread for the subject of Turn Signal Question and saw that adding a 2 watt 100 ohm resistor would lower the current for the Aux lighting and allowing the Flasher Module to pass the current limit.

    After adding the Resistor in series to both left and right Turn signal leads, E Flashers worked correctly along with the aux lighting.

    This shows that there are a number of different conditions that can cause failure of the Flasher Module of the Turn Signal System of the Slingshot. When you add aux lighting to the Turn Signal system, always check all applications including the Emergency Flashers with key on and off. Test the Turn Signals with the key on and also test with the Engine running. Sometime, they will flash with just the key on, but fail with the engine running. If any failures occur, the solution has been found, adding a 2 watt 100 ohm resistor in series with the connection to Turn Signal Leads will lower the current for the added lighting and allow the system to work properly.

  • I know we have many members that do not have the skills to solder connections. Here is a video of a way to make simple connections in an electrical circuit. In this case we are adding a resistor in series with a circuit. The Tap Splice Connectors are available at any hardware store. You need to know the gauge of wire and select the proper range. I am using !8 to 14 Gauge. The wires I am showing are 18 gauge.
