When did you repalce the OE tires

  • I'm not sure whether to give that a "like" or "dislike." Jesus.

I'm with ya @KayTwo - I have been bat shit crazy spending money on my Sling but $346 for 1 tire?? @Spudinator you are da man!! Need to know if the Michelin lasts as long as 2 Nitto 555's. The Nittos stick pretty damn good for the extent of my driving ability. I know Michelins are generally expensive but that seems excessive. Spud - what makes em so good???

I might not be right but I can sure sound like it

  • I had my rear tire replaced nearly two weeks ago with the Nitto 555 G2.
At 8400mi the front kendas still look real good and since my traction issues are at the rear I chose to get some more life out of them.
It's rained a lot since instal so I don't realy have any miles on the rear yet but... That sumbitch will squall like a moose in heat. I can't yet say the traction is better ( over stock ) because it's not scuffed in.
What I should add is that I'm turboed and that rolling on the throttle in 2nd will still blow the tire off it. Haven't tried 3rd yet. The Kenda would spin up with a roll on in third.

You know it probably compares to the 555 pretty close. These are Y rated tires. I haven't driven in the 555s but have a friend that has driven both and he said the Michelon seemed to have a little bit better traction. If I lit my tires up often I would not have spent that much. Since we are doing the dragon I thought for $100 more I will give it a try. Plus I have a very good salesman at discount tire. lol

  • @Speedr117
No sir I've never run a 555 before. I did a lot of reading and from what I gathered, based on reviews, was that traction was considered identical between the 555 and the G2. The improvement comes in Wet traction.
On a side note; Nitto makes a G2 to fit the stock rear SL wheel. They do Not produce a G2 to fit the stock SL front wheels. For the fronts you would have to go with the 555 "Extreme".
Since I plan to someday replace the wheels I chose to get the rear replaced for the MV trip and give myself more time to find what I realy want, otherwise I'd have done extremes front with the G2 rear.
    Hope that helps

  • Rear at 16,700, still had tread but wanted to get ready for the season. I figure a new tire each season on the rear like my mc takes. Fronts still have plenty of tread and will probably go 30,000+. I replaced with Kenda which I have no complaints about. Bought 2 for $260 including shipping.

  • I'm unsure which brand tires I will upgrade to next time I need tires. The Goodyear Eagle F1's at Discount Tire leave me with some concern over their cost and the possible impact of a clearly asymmetric tire on the rear. They cost around $545 plus installation & road hazard warranty, if available, for the Base model tire sizes which totals almost $700. NTB has Sumitomo HTR Z III tires (Front 225/45ZR17/Rear 295/30ZR18) for around $424 plus installation & road hazard warranty, if available. The Goodyears look like a better year-round tire, while the Sumitomos are a 3-season tire, not to be used in freezing or snow/ice conditions. I wouldn't be driving in freezing or snow/ice conditions, but might ride in near freezing temps. The Sumitomos are also asymmetrical tires, so they pose the same concern as far as any potentially negative handling impacts by having just one rear tire.
Does the use of an asymmetrical tire on a single rear-wheel vehicle pose a problem compared to having two rear wheels where any possible directional-favoring design would be canceled out by the other tire?
On a second note, I believe the Sumitomos lack a mileage warranty, while, IIRC, a Discount Tire rep posted on the other site that if the tires can't be rotated, then the tire is only rated at half its normal warranty, which would mean the Goodyears should have a warranty of 22,500 miles.
Since I desire to use the same tire pattern on all 3 tires, I'm limited as to which brands I can consider.

After checking some posts by Discount Tire on the other forum, I am no longer as concerned about running an asymmetrical tire on the rear.

  • It does look like I will get a whole lot less miles out of the BFG's than the 16,000 plus miles that I got on the Kenda's. Besides that they are cupping in the middle with reduced tire pressure, I am down to 26 psi now. I will go with the General's next time

Okie Rider Just how close, do you need to be, to hear a Moose squall in Heat? I did not know OK. had moose.

I don't know if I would have called it a "squall"...it's more of a bellow....but either way, it's impressive as hell, and a little unnerving when you're on the ground with them, inside a hundred yards or so. LOL

  • Thanks @OkieRider! Please let me know how you like it.

@WingShot, you're the exact person I was looking for. So you had the original 555 on the back, and now you have the 555 G2. Please let me know if you can tell a difference (both dry and wet). Also, are you running 555's in the front? Thanks in advance!

OK Ok ok... Ya got me ! I've never even seen a Moose except on the Animal channel. Living in Oklahoma we don't even have em in Zoo's.
But ! I dated a gal once that when given two bags of Spanish peanuts, wrapped in a moving in the back of a 79 chevy van and parked at the end of a dirt road on a Hot summer night... Would make sounds that could only be described as Beastly ! I was only 19 years old and it scared the hell outa me, but I didn't run. At that time I thought it sounded like a Moose in heat. She kinda looked like one hence the association.
    Ahh... The Good ole days.

  • Goodyear eagle f1s for me. Happy. Lots of miles of experience with them. Run them on my 4 wheelers too. Asymmetric just pushes more water to one side than the other, if anything. Doesn't bother me.

Nittos are popular, and the bfg is the new guy in town. Early reports are good. Also hear of the continental pro contact, though no experience or direct reports.

Stock Kendas are junk. Would rather just ride on the metal rims. My opinion only. Just not in the mood to die.

  • I replaced my Kendas when I drove it home from the dealership and had them Roadforce balanced. I run ( 2. Hankook Evo 2 $163..) I put $8,500 miles and I am close to the wear bar. I will say I have done quite a few enthusiastic takeoffs  I am going to replace the rear before I leave for the Smoke show... I mean the Smokies :D I also think the tread pattern on them look good.

Side note.. I have all 3 Kendas I will sell for $300 if anyone is interested.

  • I definitely recommend the Hankooks. Ran a escort for a WTC Steel delivery last week and the tires really proved themselves. They have always been good on the WV twisties but hadn't done much rain. On the esort run I had 2.5hrs highway driving in SEVERE rain, some so hard I could barely see, and I had NO issues with hydroplaining.
