Tires...what are you running?

  • Anyone getting over 12-14,000 miles on a rear tire is doing really good. :) Us boosted guys get around 4-5,000 usually. But spinning the tire is a lot of fun.

  • We are coming up due for a rear tire and even though we are very happy with the Yokohama YK740 GTX tires we have on the front, Yokohama does not manufacture this tire in 255/35-R20.

We have come to liking our Yokohama YK740GTX tires, (Discount Tire), so much on the front that we have decided to do the 245/40R20 on the rear, (replacing the stock 255/35R20.) I do not believe that the difference in size should cause us any issues?

What have we come to liking about these tires?

    1) They have been providing excellent wet and dry traction at all temperatures.

    2) They have been the quietest tires we have tried so far.

    3) And the big surprise is that they have provided us the best ride of tires we have tried before.

I need to confess that I was really hesitant to installing an asymmetrical tire on the rear, but you really need to be looking for and paying attention to notice it.

  • Numbers should be good. Glad you found what you were looking for.

  • What's the widest tire I can put on the rear with rim size 20x10.5"? I currently have a 305 30zr20 mounted on my 2015 SL.

Most manufacturer's will specify the minimum and maximum as well as the recommended wheel widths for their tires by size. Here's an example of the larger 20" tire vs wheel sizes for the Nitto 555 G2 -

As shown, Nitto recommends at least a 10.5" wheel width for your tire size if you were running a Nitto 555 G2.

Check your tire manufacturer's website for your specific tire model and size.

  • The rear tire got down to the wear bars and we decided to replace it with a Yokohama YK740 GTX so to match the front. As shown above a minor alteration is that we needed to go with a 245/40R20. Two things become immediately apparent after this installation. The first being a further reminder of how much softer ride this tire provides over the BF Goodrich G-FORCE™ COMP-2™ we previously had, a noticeably more comfortable ride. Second is where we have about a 4 inch lip to jump backing into our garage, and with the Comp 2s I needed to take a lil run and still the rear tire would spin pulling up the front tires. With the Yokohama I simply backed into the garage, very slight run, and nary a spin of the tire. So the Yokohama's dry traction is noticeably better than the Comp 2s.

  • The tire company's should also list the actual tread width (WHAT MEETS THE ROAD). Here is something that most people do not know, the stock Kenda has the widest tread width of any other brand in the 255x35x20 size. That was why I saved a stock Kenda rear for track day and oh boy do they stick when hot. I need me another one mounted for track days.

Yep, we had no complaints at all about the Kendas on those hot-n-dry summer days, but I found out very early on that when it became cooler and/or on wet roads they became absolutely dangerous!

  • Before anyone jumps all over me, I KNOW this tire is for my new toy and not the Slingshot. But just showing what I bought and if it does what i hope it does, I'll let you all know. I haven't checked if they are available in all the Slingshot size options. These are 235/35/19 for the front. They should have a reasonable life, good wet as well as dry traction, so it's a win win win situation. Subject to change once I run the heck out of them

looks like the same tire that I am running on Sling II right now

  • Cool. And how are they working out for you? What tire are you running?

Mine are the Riken Raptor ZR there is a small difference from yours. A great tread pattern for the wet or dry. Grip wise compared to the NITTO 555 G2, way way better dry traction. I have not had them on the track to compare to the KENDA's when hot. They are also better than the BFG tire.

Yesterday, since Justina needed the Honda, I was committed to having the Grasshopper taking me to work yesterday. It was still dark, being before sunrise, with the temps in the mid to lower 30's, and there had been rain showers reported in the area the night before. My route is a two lane road through the mountains including a small pass. On account there was a possibility of wet roads and ice I did have the traction control turned off. I thought that I felt one minor traction insecurity but otherwise I made it to work in my usual time without incident, but my co-worker was late. It seems that in the 20 minutes time in which she was following me there were at least two accidents reportedly caused by icy roads, and they were posting warnings because of such. I had been mostly oblivious.

I think I am pretty happy with these YokohamaYK740 GTX tires!
